A recent development concerning APEX Cybernetics in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is moving Legendary’s Monsterverse closer to a crucial element from the original Godzilla films. A storyline in the second season of the Apple TV+ series acts as a backstory for Godzilla vs. Kong, subtly establishing the origins of Mechagodzilla’s creation.
The show has deepened our understanding of APEX Cybernetics – their goals and beliefs before Walter Simmons used the last of King Ghidorah to build Mechagodzilla – through characters like Brenda Hall and Jason Trissop.
In the fourth episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, Trissop reveals APEX’s plans for “coexistence,” explaining how those plans connect to their decision to activate the giant mecha at the end of Godzilla vs. Kong. At the same time, Brenda Hall explains to May the purpose of the code she developed, revealing it could have consequences that go beyond the events of Godzilla vs. Kong.

The movie Godzilla vs. Kong revealed that APEX Cybernetics had captured several creatures from Skull Island. They were using these creatures to test a program called May’s code, which they’d installed into a device designed to control a creature’s aggressive behavior, as explained by Brenda.
Brenda showed May how the device could calm a Leafwing for about thirty seconds. She explained that the short duration was due to May having deleted some of the code, meaning they were limited to what they currently had. If May were to return to APEX, they might be able to improve the device and fix its limitations.
APEX aims to suppress a creature’s instincts and replace them with behaviors they prefer. If successful, controlling a creature’s emotions would allow APEX to dictate its actions – making it aggressive when useful and calm when necessary. This would essentially give them a way to control creatures like the Titans do.
People Controlling Titans Has A Long History In The Godzilla Franchise
The idea of controlling monsters isn’t new to Godzilla movies. It goes all the way back to the original Showa era films, starting with Invasion of Astro-Monster. In that film, aliens known as the Xiliens used their technology to take control of Godzilla, King Ghidorah, and Rodan.
Many films since then have used a similar trick to create exciting monster battles. For example, in Terror of Mechagodzilla, Titanosaurus was controlled by an outside force, and in Godzilla: Final Wars, Godzilla was forced to battle his friends due to mind control.
Perhaps most famously, it played a heroic role in Destroy All Monsters, where the heroes enlisted Godzilla and the monsters of Monster Island to overcome King Ghidorah.
The Monsterverse Has Already Been Setting Up Humans To Use Mind Control On Titans
In Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Brenda’s revelations build on the existing foundation of the Monsterverse, paving the way for a long-established idea from the Godzilla films to be incorporated. The series suggests this concept was once a weapon in the world of Godzilla and Kong, though its existence had been forgotten.
Hidden messages in the end credits of Godzilla: King of the Monsters revealed that ancient civilizations could communicate with the Titans telepathically. They also tried to use the Titans as weapons in wars.
The details of how they tried to control the Titans weren’t clear, but the earlier mention of telepathy suggested they were using mind control. It seems likely they used this telepathic connection to turn the Titans into weapons.
In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, a new way Titans can control each other was revealed. The Skar King used a special blue crystal to control Shimo, effectively making him a slave. This control lasted until Kong destroyed the crystal in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, freeing Shimo.
Currently, no one can control a monster like the Skar King controlled Shimo in the movie. However, if things progress as hinted at by Brenda in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, it won’t be long before a company like APEX Cybernetics – or another organization – manages to control a Titan.
Considering the events in the Monsterverse, it’s possible this technology was already developed. With May’s assistance, APEX might have finished it earlier than anticipated and tested a more powerful version on the Leafwing attached to Titanus X.
If Titan X falls under the control of APEX Cybernetics, it could lead to the epic final battle of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ second season – potentially against Godzilla or Kong. This would mean the destruction caused by Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong was the second disaster deliberately created by APEX.
