The MonsterVerse Adds Another Spinoff With Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Prequel

This character has been reimagined countless times in TV and film since its debut in 1954. Now, with the popular MonsterVerse doing well, Apple TV is hoping Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will be a hit.

The MonsterVerse film series began in 2014 with the movie Godzilla, and has continued with several more films. In 2023, the universe expanded to television with the animated series Skull Island and the live-action Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. According to a recent report from Nexus Point News, Apple TV+ has reportedly approved a new series that would serve as a prequel to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and would feature Wyatt Russell reprising his role as a younger version of Lee Shaw.

I’m hearing some really interesting buzz about the new Masters of the Air prequel! Apple TV hasn’t officially said anything yet, but sources say it’s going to be set during the Cold War. Apparently, it’s going to explore the conflict between the US and Russia, but with a monstrous twist – so expect some creatures alongside the political drama. I’m already hooked!

Joby Harold, known for his work on Obi-Wan Kenobi and Army of the Dead, is the showrunner and executive producer of the new series, alongside his wife and partner, Tory Tunnell. Frank Russell will also serve as an executive producer. Production is slated to begin next summer in Prague.

Season 1 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters picks up a year after the events of the 2014 Godzilla film, when the existence of monsters became public knowledge. The Apple TV+ series explores the beginnings of the monster-tracking organization Monarch, and follows Cate and Kentaro Randa, half-siblings who are investigating their father’s ties to the group. The story unfolds across two time periods: the 1950s and 2015.

Legendary’s MonsterVerse Keeps Growing

Apple TV recently announced the next installment of the creature franchise will premiere early next year, with a release date set for February 27, 2026. The show will feature the return of Kurt Russell and his son, Wyatt Russell, reprising their roles as Army officer Lee Show.

The popular character will be back in future movies. Following the success of the 2014 film, the series continued with Kong: Skull Island in 2017 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. In 2021, Godzilla vs. Kong brought the two titans together, and their story will continue in a new film coming out in 2024.

The MonsterVerse franchise is expanding with a new film. Set to release on March 26, 2027, it will feature the return of Dan Stevens as Trapper Beasley, alongside new cast members Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Matthew Modine, Delroy Lindo, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Sam Neill.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters returns on Feb. 27, 2026.
