The Missed Opportunity – Everdale: Two Quiet Goodbyes

Story Highlights

  • Everdale experienced two shutdowns by the developers despite it having a pre-test by another name.
  • Premium currency Gem couldn’t carry the game, discouraging players from making purchases, one of the big reason for to shutdown
  • Everdale failed to generate the expected market value.

Originally, Everdale was a serene city-building game created by the well-known video game company, Supercell. The gameplay revolved around camaraderie and fellowship, set in a tranquil, laid-back fantasy realm. Everdale stood out as a noteworthy title from its creators, but fans were left disheartened on more than one occasion due to the game’s necessity for two temporary shutdowns. In this article, I’ll delve into why Everdale was a lost chance as the company ultimately decided to cease production of the game.

Featured Column – The Missed Opportunity

Have you ever played a game and felt disappointed thinking, “What a pity, I’ve missed something here!”? GamingonPhone’s column titled “The Missed Opportunity” dives deep into this sentiment by examining squandered chances in gameplay, design, or marketing that could have significantly improved these mobile games. Each article analyzes the errors made and offers suggestions for improvement.

Everdale was impressive at launch, quite a stand-out title from Supercell

In a heartbeat, players found themselves captivated by Everdale, a game that left quite an impression. When I first delved into it, my immediate thought was “Wow! This surpasses Hay Day in many ways“. Granted, Hay Day was popular during its time, but Everdale drew me in more. Some might debate this, but the immersive gameplay that Everdale provides is something I appreciate.

It’s incredible to hear some players express, “Everdale is the only game I’ve enjoyed in the past five years!” Yet, it’s essential to remember that every game has its devoted followers. One individual’s opinion shouldn’t overshadow the general consensus. For me, Everdale continues to send shivers down my spine with its idyllic village and upgrades, as well as the valley I’ve grown attached to over time.

In Everdale, there was enjoyment to be found, yet Supercell may have identified potential problems with its monetization strategy. While this is beneficial for players since they can spend money to access additional features, as a consumer, I might hesitate due to the nature of the game. This could resonate with many other gamers too.

Supercell’s high standard may have been the key reason

Supercell boasts three top-tier games: Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars, and Clash Royale. Developing another game that meets their high standards for quality and revenue is no easy task, especially since they’ve previously dabbled in farming simulation games. In other words, they have a proven model to follow.

Although Supercell mentioned that the game didn’t align with their goals, they haven’t specified the exact problem. Similarly, Metacore expressed similar concerns, which has left the fans puzzled.

Supercell has historically set a high bar for itself, as indicated by its tendency to retire games more often than it maintains them actively in the market.

For Everdale, aspects such as market potential, future, worth, and more were at stake, which seemed to be its misstep. Some enthusiasts argued that the game wasn’t bringing in enough revenue for Supercell. Others suggested that no one would invest money in a leisurely game. I find both perspectives plausible.

Metacore’s shutting down proved to be the final nail in Everdale’s coffin

In a surprising twist, Everdale was actually released under a different name, Valleys & Villages, by Osmium Interactive Pte. Ltd., a full year before its soft launch in August 2021. Supercell initially published the game to gauge market demand, but despite being rebranded under their banner in 2021, it didn’t meet expectations and was subsequently closed down.

In 2023, the game resurfaced in development when Metacore acquired the IP rights. Just like everyone else, I was thrilled to see it back. However, on September 18, 2024, the company announced they were closing the servers.

After Metacore resumed work on the game, fans felt a glimmer of optimism. However, the game fell short of “living up to expectations” set by Metacore. The company admitted that the main cause for discontinuing the game was its inability to meet the anticipated market worth, essentially meaning that the game lacked the earning potential. Everdale will forever be seen as a lost chance for us!
