In a surprising twist, the film “Thunderbolts” unveiled one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s strongest and most intimidating characters. However, this powerful character’s debut was unexpectedly undermined by an off-screen vomiting scene, which felt jarring for a movie that focuses on some of the less formidable characters in the MCU’s lineup of superheroes with immense powers. This unexpected turn of events was indeed effective in subverting expectations, as was the final revelation in “Thunderbolts”.

Currently, the New Avengers possess strength beyond just physical power. The officially recognized supergroup resides in the former Avengers headquarters, with Sam Wilson apparently taking legal action against them for misusing the Avengers name. If these two teams were to engage in a fight, it could potentially favor Sam’s group. However, the balance might have shifted had it not been for a crucial member who has recently joined the New Avengers, making their debut in an unimpressive manner during the initial act.

Sentry Is One Of The MCU’s Most Powerful Characters

Sentry Is Nearly Omnipotent In Marvel Comics

In anticipation of the release of “Thunderbolts*“, it was eventually unveiled that Lewis Pullman’s character Bob was none other than Robert Reynolds, a destitute and unassuming drug addict. After ingesting a highly potent dose of the super soldier serum known as the Golden Sentry Serum in Marvel Comics, he was endowed with extraordinary abilities. This transformation led to his secret identity, the Sentry, who is renowned in the comics for possessing the power equivalent to one million exploding suns. Essentially, this bestows upon him virtually limitless powers akin to omnipotence, encompassing capabilities such as:

  • Super strength
  • Super speed
  • Invulnerability
  • Molecular manipulation
  • Flight
  • Healing factor
  • Teleportation
  • Energy manipulation

It’s uncertain if the MCU’s Sentry has exactly the same array of abilities, given that he was portrayed with the power of a thousand exploding suns rather than a million. However, it’s certainly plausible. In his initial screen appearance, Sentry swiftly dealt with the Thunderbolts, who failed to inflict even a scratch on him. During this scene, he demonstrated speed, strength, and durability along with flight, heat vision, telekinesis, and the unique ability to grip Ghost when she was supposed to be incorporeal.

Although Sentry is undeniably one of the strongest characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s an important catch. The Void, the darker counterpart of Sentry, represents Bob’s dark emotions. On-screen, the Void has shown the ability to send numerous individuals to a realm filled with “shame rooms” where they relive their most regrettable memories. It’s likely that the Void also possesses all of Sentry’s powers.

In this scenario, it appears that Bob has been observed attempting to control his potent alternate persona, rather than letting it run wild, even though his assistance could be beneficial to his fellow New Avengers. However, despite Sentry being incredibly powerful, I find it hard to accept that he was introduced in such an unimpressive way.

The First Thing That Bob Does Is Throw Up

Initially, Bob made his debut in “Thunderbolts*” amidst a fierce four-way fight. Somehow confined (possibly forcefully), his enclosure was accidentally opened by John Walker during the chaos. As the other occupants of the destructive room were preoccupied, Bob calmly exited his containment. This sequence of events led to Ghost accomplishing the mission assigned by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and fatally shooting Taskmaster. In reaction to the grisly scene, Bob signaled his arrival by vomiting.

This initial encounter with Bob seemed quite ordinary and unheroic, as if to emphasize his humble beginnings and underline his lack of superhero qualities at first glance. Yet, it’s clear that he would eventually transform into the powerful Sentry in the movie, making this seemingly unexciting introduction all the more intriguing and effective for creating a striking contrast later on.

Bob’s First MCU Scene Sets Up The Story’s Big Twists Effectively

It’s Difficult To See Bob Transforming Into A Powerful Superhero

In my opinion, Thunderbolts did an exceptional job developing Bob’s character. Contrary to what some might have expected, introducing Bob as an ordinary human caught in a super-powered fight set the stage perfectly for the shocking revelation that he would transform into a superhero. Compared to characters like Tony Stark, Thor, and Steve Rogers who are well-known for their self-assuredness and determination, Bob is a far cry from the typical hero image.

Despite anticipating that Bob would eventually transform into The Sentry, his initial appearance caught me off guard nonetheless. Although Sentry portrays himself as a deity, Bob is instantly depicted with all too human imperfections, adding to his relatability. I appreciate how this portrayal aligns well with the comic book character Bob Reynolds and highlights the stark contrast between him, The Sentry, and The Void. Notably, The Void emerges as a formidable threat on par with the Avengers, whereas Bob is unable to endure even witnessing someone being shot.

Bob Is Quite The Juxtaposition To Sentry

The contrast between Bob’s ordinary human appearance and his invincible superhero form serves to accentuate Sentry’s power significantly, perhaps more so than the transformation of Bruce Banner into The Hulk. This is because while Bruce contributes intellectually to the team, he is not equipped for direct combat. However, Bob’s transformation is less drastic than Bruce’s, with only a superhero suit and blond hair setting him apart, save for his extraordinary powers. This early portrayal of Bob’s character leaves one in awe, making it hard to comprehend how he is the same individual as the almighty Sentry.

Without the usual Bruce Banner and Hulk relationship, I’m eagerly anticipating how this story unfolds in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The Thunderbolts post-credits scene hinted that Bob has joined the New Avengers, primarily as a means to monitor him should Sentry and the Void resurface again. It’s reassuring to see that Bob remains so calm, even though he won’t flinch at bloodshed anymore.

It will be fascinating to observe how the story unfolds in the upcoming movies, especially since they will introduce the New Avengers. Following the Thunderbolts saga, we move on to Avengers: Doomsday. Since Lewis Pullman is part of the confirmed cast for Avengers: Doomsday, it’s plausible that he might reprise his role as Sentry, despite the team’s efforts to suppress his alter-ego.
