‘The Matrix 5’ Gets New Update From Director Drew Goddard

Drew Goddard is currently promoting his new sci-fi movie, Project Hail Mary, which he wrote and directed. The film is based on the book by Andy Weir and stars Ryan Gosling. Goddard previously received an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay for The Martian, starring Matt Damon, making him well-suited to adapt another of Weir’s stories. He’s also busy working on The Matrix 5.

I was so excited to hear about the next Matrix movie being announced for 2024! It’s going to be different, though – this is the first time someone other than the Wachowskis will be directing. But honestly, I think Drew Goddard is perfect for the job. He’s an amazing writer, of course, but he’s also proven himself as a fantastic director with films like The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale. Plus, he’s a genuine fan of The Matrix – a movie I absolutely love, with Keanu Reeves kicking butt and downloading skills! It’s incredible to think about the original cast – Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hugo Weaving – and how that whole story about humans versus machines just keeps expanding with each sequel.

In an interview with Variety, James Gunn shared his deep appreciation for The Matrix films, emphasizing his passion for the series and his commitment to his work, which he approaches with great dedication.

So, I’m still early in the writing process, and I really need room to figure out the best story. Honestly, my main guiding principle is always whether I genuinely love the idea. And I absolutely adore what Lana and Lilly Wachowski did with those films – they’ve deeply influenced how I think about storytelling. Taking on this project feels like a huge responsibility. I really want to honor both the original creators and the fans, because, let’s be real, I’m a fan myself, and I want to get it right.

When asked about whether Keanu Reeves might be in The Matrix 5, Goddard became noticeably reserved, simply saying:

“I can’t speak to that.”

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are set to direct the next Matrix film, following the 2021 release of The Matrix Resurrections, which proved to be a controversial installment in the series. Lord acknowledges the film didn’t perform as well at the box office due to the pandemic, but emphasizes the emotional core of Resurrections and suggests the new film will likely build upon similar themes and ideas. He stated:

I’m not sure, but it really affected me. The movie was incredibly moving, and it might be the most emotionally powerful of the four. It came out during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Warner Bros. was releasing films directly to streaming.

Some fans are understandably concerned about the change in directors for the next Matrix film. However, it’s worth remembering that Warner Bros. wasn’t initially planning another sequel after Resurrections didn’t perform as hoped. In fact, it was director Drew Goddard who pitched them a fresh concept. Jesse Ehrman, a production president at Warner Bros., emphasized Goddard’s genuine passion for The Matrix and believes he’ll bring a unique and inspired vision to the series, drawing from his deep appreciation for the original films and characters.

As a huge fan of the series, I’m still eagerly awaiting news on The Matrix 5. Warner Bros. has said they’ll share updates as the screenwriter, Drew Goddard, finishes the script. We can expect to hear about casting and the plot details closer to when they actually start filming. There’s no firm date yet, but they want to assure us that another Matrix movie is definitely happening, which is fantastic news!
