The Masked Singer’s Woodpecker and Ship revealed as young sitcom star and popular singer

The Masked Singer's Woodpecker and Ship revealed as young sitcom star and popular singer

As a fan of The Masked Singer since its inception, I was thrilled to see the unmasking of the Woodpecker, who turned out to be none other than the talented and charismatic Marsai Martin. Her journey on the show, stepping out of her comfort zone to embrace singing, is a testament to the transformative power of this unique reality TV format.

On the latest episode of The Masked Singer on Fox, themed “Soundtrack of My Life,” actress Marsai Martin from Black-ish and Grammy-winning singer Paula Cole were revealed and eliminated from the competition.

The Group A Finals kicked off with all three finalist groups – the three member Buffalos, the Woodpecker and the Ship – all singing High Hopes by Panic! At The Disco.

As an over-the-moon fan, I can tell you that the audience rose to their feet in a thunderous applause, leaving us all on our toes with anticipation. Out of the three talented vocalists, only one would progress to the next round, while the other two remained hidden beneath their masks. The electrifying Ding Dong Keep It On Bells was brought back into play, offering a last-chance salvation for one of the singers.

As an ardent admirer, I, captivated by this colossal vessel with a magnificent head reminiscent of a ship, couldn’t help but be drawn in as she began to unveil her enigmatic self. She chose the melodious tune “Because the Night” by the illustrious Patti Smith Group, a selection that only served to deepen the mystery surrounding her true identity.

Additionally, she mentioned that during her youth, she eagerly seized the opportunity to perform backup vocals on an overseas tour while subsisting on just $2 per day.

‘You’ve been killing power ballads!’ Robin Thicke, 47, said.

The Men in Black unveiled another hint regarding the spaceship, this time being a congratulatory letter from singer LeAnn Rimes upon her winning the Best New Artist award in 1998.

The Ship expressed delight when it received recognition from the incredibly gifted artist, LeAnn Rimes, making it feel valued worldwide.

Ken Jeong, 55, thought that meant that the Ship was Alanis Morissette.

‘That doesn’t sound like Alanis Morissette,’ Robin said.

‘Wouldn’t it be ironic if Ken was right,’ Jenny McCarthy, 51, said.

I was the one who, from the beginning, accurately suspected that Paula Cole could be the mystery figure due to the subtle cowboy hints in her riddles.

Being an introvert, I must admit, it’s overwhelming,” the Ship confessed. “But I’ve been enjoying this show with my daughter, and we both appreciate your hospitality and kindness.

Next the Woodpecker shared more clues to her identity.

‘I come from a long line of strong chicks in my family tree,’ she said.

Instead of her, additional hints included a picture of Regina Hall, a vinyl turntable, a globe, and a hamburger. Later on, she stepped onto the stage to perform “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae.

‘That was amazing,’ Ken said.

The Woodpecker expressed her hope that she was earning her grandmother’s approval. Her subtle hint, however, came in the form of a pair of spectacles.

‘I know who it is now,’ Host Nick Cannon said.

Woodpecker commented, “These glasses make me think of the beginning of my journey, as they symbolize clear vision – a luxury I’ve come to appreciate more as my career has soared.

Sadly the Woodpecker received the lowest score and was the first contestant of the night unmasked.

Initially, Robin, Ken, Jenny, Rita Ora all had different guesses about the identity of the Woodpecker on The Masked Singer – Liza Koshy, Quinta Brunson, Tatyana Ali, and Keke Palmer respectively. However, it was actually Marsai Martin, a 20-year-old star from Black-ish, who was unmasked as the first contestant. When asked about her reasons for participating in The Masked Singer, Marsai shared her response with Nick.

Initially, Marsai expressed her gratitude towards her grandmother Bonnie, then went on to say that they frequently watched this show together. She admitted that singing was something she had always found challenging, but taking on the role of a masked character in this context felt enjoyable and thrilling for her.

Afterwards, the trio of Buffalo performers stepped onto the stage, revealing emotional clues about a cherished individual they had recently lost. As they moved in sync, they performed “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve.

‘Buffalos brought out the vocals tonight,’ Nick said.

As someone who’s immersed in the world of lifestyle for quite some years now, I can confidently say that I’ve seen my fair share of triumphs and setbacks.

The additional performance they had was a tee bearing the message ‘Half Time Show’. Jenny speculated it could possibly be Boyz II Men, while Ken believed it to be Bone Thugs N Harmony. Rita Ora, on the other hand, pondered if it might have been the Black Eyed Peas.

‘I don’t think these are Fergie-less peas,’ Robin said.

Initially, the Buffalos and the Ship confronted each other in a musical faceoff, where both groups serenaded “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac. The Ship delivered its version swiftly, while the Buffalos transformed it into a soulful ballad.

‘Talk about a battle of the voice!’ Nick said.

At the end of the evening, the Buffalos were declared champions of Group A following the tallying of all votes.

In their final guesses, Rita Ora believed the mystery person to be Sarah McLachlan. Ken firmly stated it was Alanis Morissette, while Robin speculated it might be Amy Lee of Evanescence. However, only Jenny successfully identified her as Paula Cole.

‘You have Grammy awards, multi-platinum singer, why would you do the Masked Singer?’ Nick said.

Paula, aged 56, explained, “They asked me to do something that made me uneasy, but I realized there was so much potential in stepping out of my comfort zone. So, I took a leap of faith and found it exciting! It’s been enjoyable, and I get to share the experience with my daughter.

The Masked Singer will return next Wednesday on Fox.
