The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Prime Video’s Period Drama with Near-Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

Amazon has deep pockets, allowing Prime Video to consistently attract top Hollywood talent. For example, they brought together Supernatural’s Eric Kripke and the team behind Superbad (Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg) to create the hit series The Boys. They’ve also secured stars like John Krasinski for Jack Ryan, Josh Brolin for Outer Range, and even cast Jean-Claude Van Damme as a fictionalized version of himself in Jean-Claude Van Johnson.

Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of the beloved and endlessly rewatchable show Gilmore Girls, followed it up with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. This funny and dramatic series, set in New York City in the late 1950s and early 1960s, tells the story of a housewife who discovers her talent for comedy and rapidly rises to fame. Early in her comedy career, she crosses paths with the emerging comedian Lenny Bruce on the night he was arrested for using strong language during a performance.

Amy Sherman-Palladino, the talented producer behind Gilmore Girls and the fantastic pairing of Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, clearly knows how to pick great actors. So it’s no surprise that her show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, features one of the strongest casts on Prime Video.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Was Rachel Brosnahan’s Breakout Role

David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan instantly became famous last summer for their incredible performances as Superman and Lois Lane in James Gunn’s Superman film. Many believe their portrayals are the best since Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder in 1978, capturing the essence of the iconic comic book characters. However, Brosnahan might not have landed the role of Lois Lane if she hadn’t first become well-known for her part as Midge Maisel.

Rachel Brosnahan became a star playing the lead in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and she carries the show with ease. She perfectly portrays both the character’s difficult marriage and hidden dreams, as well as her journey to becoming a confident comedian. It’s rare to see an actor convincingly play a stand-up comic – they often lack the natural stage presence and timing. But Brosnahan pulls it off, much like Jean Smart did in Hacks.

Rachel Brosnahan is fantastic, but she’s part of an incredibly talented cast. The show features wonderful supporting actors like Tony Shalhoub, known for Monk, as Midge’s quirky father, and Alex Borstein, the voice of Lois Griffin, as her equally quirky manager. Marin Hinkle from Two and a Half Men plays Midge’s mother, Michael Zegen (Boardwalk Empire) portrays her husband, and Luke Kirby even won an Emmy for his role as Lenny.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Is A Rare TV Show With A Perfect Ending

It’s unusual for a TV show to finish strong with a truly satisfying conclusion. More often, even critically acclaimed series stumble at the finish line, damaging their overall reputation – think of shows like Lost, Dexter, Game of Thrones, and How I Met Your Mother. Good endings are rare, but after five seasons, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel managed to nail it with a perfect finale.

Similar to the last season of Breaking Bad, the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel began revealing how the story would end with glimpses into the future. We see Midge’s life and career develop over several decades, spanning from the 1960s to the 2000s. This approach is reminiscent of the ending of Six Feet Under, where the show establishes where the characters are headed and hints at what their future holds.
