When The Mandalorian debuted on Disney+ in 2019, it quickly became popular with Star Wars fans. However, the show subtly damaged the long-held reputation of a beloved, decades-old character. Although a new character emerged, the original hasn’t bounced back, and probably won’t. While the change was likely a good one overall, it’s still a bit disappointing.
Premiering shortly before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, The Mandalorian unexpectedly became the most important part of the Star Wars universe in the following years. While the Star Wars films began to lose popularity, the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu thrived. This success led Disney+ to focus on creating several original Star Wars series instead of big movie releases – a strategy that’s only recently started to change. Despite all the positive impact The Mandalorian had on the franchise, it also subtly damaged the space opera’s reputation in a particular way.
‘The Mandalorian’s Din Djarin Made Everyone Stop Caring About Boba Fett

Disney+
Boba Fett first appeared in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special, which is no longer considered official canon. He then appeared in the last two films of the original Star Wars trilogy. Initially played by Jeremy Bulloch, Boba Fett quickly became popular with fans thanks to his striking design and mysterious personality. Though he seemingly died in Return of the Jedi in 1983, the bounty hunter continued to appear in Star Wars novels and comics. When Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, however, they largely removed these appearances from his official history, focusing primarily on his roles in the live-action films.
Boba Fett remained a beloved character, and fans eagerly wanted to see him return in a new Disney project. When Jon Favreau developed The Mandalorian, the show’s main character looked similar to Boba Fett, which immediately satisfied many of those fans. As The Mandalorian continued, it became clear that Favreau and his team had gone above and beyond to please Boba Fett’s supporters, even though the show focused on a different bounty hunter. The high quality of the writing and production ultimately diminished the desire for a dedicated Boba Fett series.
Boba Fett’s ‘The Mandalorian’ Debut Ended up Being Little More Than a Bonus

Disney+
While The Mandalorian initially seemed to take over the role originally held by Boba Fett, the show eventually brought the character back in Season 2. Temuera Morrison, who previously played Jango Fett (Boba Fett’s ‘father’) in the prequel films and re-recorded Boba Fett’s dialogue for the original trilogy’s special editions, reprised the role. His appearance felt natural and well-integrated into the story across his four episodes, though the plot didn’t necessarily need him to move forward.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I was thrilled to see Temuera Morrison back as Boba Fett in The Mandalorian, but honestly, the show felt like it used him more to please existing fans than to really build something new around his character. It was a fantastic moment for those of us who’ve followed Star Wars for years, and even helped flesh out the world for new viewers, so I’m glad they brought him back. However, having Din Djarin and Boba Fett together sometimes felt a little strange, almost like the show was acknowledging its own history with those similar character archetypes. It wasn’t crucial to the story, but it was definitely a fun Easter egg!
‘The Mandalorian’ Made Boba Fett’s Disney+ Spinoff Show Struggle To Find an Appropriate Storyline
Boba Fett’s appearance in Season 2 of The Mandalorian essentially served as a test run for a spin-off show starring Temuera Morrison. However, The Book of Boba Fett, which premiered on Disney+ in late 2021, wasn’t well-received. Because The Mandalorian had already established Din Djarin as the central figure, many of the adventures viewers had seen with Pedro Pascal’s character could have easily been Boba Fett’s, making a similar storyline with the classic character redundant. This forced Star Wars to create a different direction for Boba Fett’s official comeback.
The Book of Boba Fett has a score of just 66% on Rotten Tomatoes. The fans rate it even lower at 48%.
Despite the initial excitement, Boba Fett’s return to Tatooine as a crime lord didn’t quite live up to expectations. The Book of Boba Fett had a difficult time finding its direction, and surprisingly, it only became engaging when Din Djarin from The Mandalorian appeared in Episode 5. After that, the show spent more time connecting to the broader Star Wars universe, and viewers became more interested in those connections than in Boba Fett’s story. In fact, when people think back on the series, they often forget about Boba Fett entirely.
Boba Fett’s Fall From Popularity Proves a Harsh Truth About His Character

Disney+
Boba Fett is undeniably a visually striking character, but his appeal largely stops there. He didn’t have enough screen time in the original Star Wars films to develop a compelling story, so people were mostly drawn to his look. A truly well-developed character wouldn’t have been so easily replaced by Din Djarin; Fett’s return would have been a priority, not something added as an afterthought.

At first, Din Djarin in The Mandalorian wasn’t particularly special. He initially served a similar role to Boba Fett, while Jon Favreau was establishing his own place within the Star Wars universe without interfering with the main storyline. The relationship between Din and Grogu was what truly shaped both of their characters, and the story could have worked just as well with Boba Fett in Din’s place, potentially even revitalizing the classic character. However, it makes sense that The Mandalorian chose to start fresh with a new character instead of one burdened by existing storylines.
