The Mandalorian star reveals character's surprising ties to Princess Leia

As a devoted Star Wars enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of the galaxy far, far away, I am thrilled to see more light shed on Alderaan and its inhabitants like Captain Carson Teva. The revelation that he is reminiscent of a New York City cop adds an intriguing layer to his character, making me eagerly anticipate his future appearances in the Mandoverse.

In my excited eagerness, my first chat with the masterminds behind The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, didn’t reveal many secrets, but they did share a pivotal piece of information regarding the homeland of the character I was about to bring to life.

Actor Lee, who portrays Captain Carson Teva in the Mandoverse’s New Republic, recently shared insights about his character’s past with fellow Star Wars actor Katee Sackhoff (Bo-Katan Kryze) on “The Sackhoff Show.” In their chat, Lee recalled his first phone conversation with Favreau and Filoni. He mentioned that they didn’t provide many specifics, simply stating, “He’s from Alderaan, he’s like a…”. Lee further explained that the character was likened to a New York City police officer by them.

Captain Teva made his debut in episode 2 of The Mandalorian‘s second season, where he was depicted as one of the X-Wing pilots pursuing Din Djarin’s Razor Crest. As the story unfolded across Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett, his character became increasingly significant. Despite this, the specifics of how he came to be important were never explicitly shown on screen.

In “The Mandalorian”, Carson shares with Cara Dune, a fellow native, that he was part of the Rebel Alliance when the Death Star annihilated their shared homeland Alderaan, which is where Princess Leia Organa resided.

As a dedicated Star Wars fan, it’s clear that Alderaan was intended to have a significant role in some of the spinoff shows, given that Carson Teva, one of its inhabitants, was slated to be a main character in the now-canceled Rangers of the New Republic series.

In the first part of the original Star Wars trilogy, Alderaan’s devastation is typically mentioned briefly as a demonstration of the Death Star’s power. However, recent developments hint at more details about this event being unveiled, with Leia’s holographic appearance at General Hera Syndulla’s trial in Ahsoka being a potential revelation point. Captain Teva was also present during the hearing and was last seen conversing with Hera and C-3PO, who delivered Leia’s message to the court.

Although it’s disappointing that Rangers of the New Republic has been cancelled, there’s a good possibility that some of its plotlines might be continued in other shows within the “Mandoverse.” In Season 3 of The Mandalorian, viewers were introduced to Adelphi Base. As the season concluded, Din Djarin was joining forces with the Rangers to aid the New Republic in tracking down remaining Imperials. Given the impending danger from Admiral Thrawn and the existence of a spy network on Coruscant, it’s plausible we might see more about Captain Teva and his connections to Alderaan in future episodes.
