The Mandalorian & Grogu movie wraps production as Rey sequel movie loses steam
As a seasoned cinematic voyager who’s witnessed the rise and fall of countless galactic sagas, it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions since the final chapter of the Skywalker saga graced our screens back in 2019. The big screen has become a desolate wasteland for all things Star Wars, with one aborted project after another announced and subsequently abandoned by Disney and Lucasfilm. It’s as if they’ve lost the plot faster than Han Solo at a Kessel Run (and we all know how that ended).
Star Wars has been facing a peculiar predicament since the sequel trilogy concluded with The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, as Disney and Lucasfilm have found it challenging to bring new projects to life on the big screen. Initiated plans for films from directors like Taika Waititi, Kevin Feige, Patty Jenkins, Rian Johnson, and David Benioff and Dan Weiss from Game of Thrones have been announced, but unfortunately, none have managed to move forward yet. It’s disheartening to make such announcements only for them to ultimately fail to materialize.
On television screens, the Star Wars universe has seen an extraordinary surge in recent times. The first-ever live-action Star Wars TV series, The Mandalorian, premiered in 2019 and has been captivating audiences for three seasons so far. Additionally, we’ve witnessed the debut of shows like Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, The Acolyte, Andor, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, not to mention animated series such as The Bad Batch. In fact, there might even be a tad too much Star Wars television content over the last five years.
Disney’s current strategy aims to intertwine these two realms. The upcoming Star Wars film is titled “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” a sequel to “The Mandalorian.” As per Puck, filming for “The Mandalorian and Grogu” has wrapped up, suggesting that the movie should meet its release date of May 22, 2026. Finally, Lucasfilm will have another Star Wars film gracing the big screen!
It has been announced that Steven Knight, who created Peaky Blinders, is no longer involved in a planned Star Wars movie focusing on Rey’s story following The Rise of Skywalker. Although there’s still a possibility for this film to materialize, considering Disney’s recent history with Star Wars films, I’ll remain skeptical until it becomes a reality.
It seems Lucasfilm might create a Star Wars movie, yet only when the project is inspired by a Star Wars TV series. While this likely brings excitement for upcoming cinematic endeavors from them, it means fans who appreciated The Mandalorian on television may need to head to theaters to potentially witness the end of this narrative; it’s uncertain, but it appears Disney is producing The Mandalorian & Grogu instead of The Mandalorian season 4. We’ll find out if this decision proves beneficial in due time.
Regarding the film’s plot, we anticipate it will continue from where The Mandalorian season 3 concluded, with Grogu officially becoming the Mandalorian’s apprentice. This movie may also delve into narratives from various Star Wars TV series, such as Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) reappearing in the galaxy far, far away to rebuild the Empire. It seems like the massive crossover event that someone out there must have wished for.
