The Mandalorian & Grogu: 5 things we learned from D23 Expo

As an ardent Star Wars enthusiast and self-proclaimed Mandalorian aficionado who’s been following this franchise since the days of the original trilogy, I must say that the recent D23 Fan Expo left me utterly thrilled and giddy with anticipation. The exclusive sneak peeks into The Mandalorian & Grogu and Andor Season 2 were nothing short of electrifying, especially the confirmation that filming for the former has begun!

Last night, the D23 Fan Expo hosted by Disney took place in Anaheim, California. It was a significant event for Star Wars enthusiasts, particularly those who were there, as they received exclusive sneak peeks of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” and “Andor” Season 2.

Originally, trailers for “Skeleton Crew” and sneak peeks of “Andor” Season 2 were anticipated, but what left me astonished was that the event also showcased an early look at the much-awaited “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” On stage, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau unveiled exclusive footage from the upcoming movie, confirming that it’s currently in production.

Although the video isn’t formally distributed by Star Wars, it can be found online. Given its unofficial status, the quality might not be top-notch. Nevertheless, I managed to watch it several times, and here are some insights I gathered about the film:

1. Din Djarin and Grogu will team up with Zeb Orrelios

This was a fun moment for all of us Star Wars Rebels fans that was set up in The Mandalorian Season 3’s finale, where we saw Zeb sitting at the same bar Din and Grogu entered towards the end of Chapter 24. Din and Grogu probably teamed up with Zeb on Adelphi Base, on the planet of Adelphi, and we’ll probably see them working together pretty often. Now that Din knows Zeb, there’s a good chance he’ll meet the rest of Zeb’s friends. Who knows, perhaps Din’s next stop is Ahsoka Season 2.

2. The Razor Crest is back

In a refreshed and improved state, the Razor Crest has returned, yet it’s Zeb who’s manning the controls within. For now, we can’t decide if this ship truly belongs to Din or Zeb. It could be that Peli Motto granted Din a freshly refurbished Razor Crest as he hoped in The Book of Boba Fett, Chapter 5 – “The Return of the Mandalorian.” This implies that Din may own not just one, but two ships now – the N1 Starfighter being an additional option when speed is crucial. Meanwhile, the Razor Crest continues to serve as his airborne residence with Grogu.

3. Din considers himself a Bounty Hunter again

Now, Din has resumed his bounty hunting activities; however, he’s choosy this time around, as Grogu takes precedence over all else. This choice positions him to take on missions once more, akin to what we saw in Season 1. But these new missions may be unique and could entail tracking down notable figures of significant importance.

4. Din and Grogu will visit Hoth

In this part of the trailer, there’s a delightful reference to the classic trilogy with Din and Grogu seemingly on the frozen world that resembles Hoth. The scene includes a mouse droid, a AT-RT piloted by Din, massive AT-AT walkers, and countless Snowtroopers. It appears we’re in for some thrilling action!

5. Grogu may start assisting Din on his missions

In this scene, we see Grogu scuttling along a tunnel, suggesting he might be either evading someone, following his father’s guidance, or assisting Mando on a quest by retrieving something. As Grogu gets accustomed to the Mandalorian lifestyle, this action could be one of his apprenticeship tasks.

Fingers crossed, we might get to watch that teaser in HD prior to the Star Wars Celebration, happening next year. Admittedly, it’s not a lot, but I’m still satisfied with the glimpse I got, despite the blurry footage.

The Mandalorian & Grogu premieres May 22, 2026.
