The Mandalorian and Grogu: Jonny Coyne reprises role from Season 3

As a hardcore Star Wars fan who has been following The Mandalorian since its debut, I must say that the news about Jonny Coyne reprising his role as an Imperial Warlord in the upcoming film has me absolutely thrilled! I remember his first appearance in Season 3 and the intrigue it brought.

In their latest announcement, Deadline shares that Jonny Coyne will once again take on the character of an Imperial Warlord in the forthcoming movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu, further expanding the stellar cast.

In the 23rd chapter of The Mandalorian Season 3, we were introduced to the character Coyne for the first time in Star Wars. This was during the meeting in “The Spies.” Members present included Moff Gideon, portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito, Gilad Pellaeon, played by Xander Berkeley, and Brendol Hux, who was acted by Brian Gleeson – a character significant as the father of Armitage Hux from the sequel trilogy. The episode didn’t provide Coyne’s character name, but it does create an intriguing scenario that leaves us wondering about what might unfold in future episodes.

Season 3 ended with Din Djarin agreeing to work as an independent contractor for the New Republic, hunting down the Imperial remnants. With his bounty hunter past, it would be something he would be very good at. This could be where we see Coyne’s warlord enter the picture.

In a slightly different phrasing: Although Grand Admiral Thrawn is likely the main antagonist of the movie, I believe the warlord could serve as an initial adversary. The story might unfold with this warlord engaging in a tense space battle against our lead character, the Mandalorian, and his trainee. As the warlord boasts about his power and might, the battle would swiftly turn in favor of Din, who skillfully disables the warlord’s spaceship using his N-1 Starfighter. This engaging opening scene would provide an opportunity to reconnect with our protagonists and catch a glimpse of their recent activities.

It’s all guesswork for now. We’ll have to be patient and find out what part Jonny Coyne’s Imperial Warlord might take in the upcoming movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is due in theaters on May 22, 2026.
