The Magnificent Seven Is Becoming a Streaming TV Series

Hollywood frequently relies on familiar stories, so it’s no surprise that many popular movies are getting sequels, reboots, or remakes. Now, a classic Western film is joining that trend.

The classic film is being adapted into an eight-episode television series for MGM+.

I’m really excited about the new Magnificent Seven series! It’s a Western drama being written by Tim Kring, who I know from Heroes and Touch. Donald De Line, along with Lawrence Mirisch and Bruce Kaufman, are all executive producing, which is a great sign. Apparently, they’re planning to start filming in June 2026, so it’s still a little ways off, but I’m already looking forward to it!

This isn’t the first attempt to create a television series based on The Magnificent Seven this century. Earlier in 2023, Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of True Detective, was developing a new version for Amazon, following his work on the 2016 film remake. However, that project was cancelled, and Pizzolatto isn’t involved with the current adaptation, which is being produced by MGM+, a company owned by Amazon.

Set in the 1880s, The Magnificent Seven centers on a band of mercenaries who come to the aid of a quiet Quaker village after a ruthless landowner’s men attack. The series follows these flawed heroes as they live among the Quakers and struggle with the moral dilemma of using violence to protect a community dedicated to peace. Each episode will delve into the backgrounds and motivations of the seven mercenaries, revealing what brought them to this dangerous mission.

I first saw The Magnificent Seven when it came out in 1960. It was directed by John Sturges, and the story was written by William Roberts. The movie had an amazing cast – Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn, and Horst Buchholz were all in it! What I didn’t realize at the time is that it wasn’t an original story. It was actually a remake of a fantastic Japanese film called Seven Samurai from 1954, directed by Akira Kurosawa.

The Magnificent Seven Led to Multiple Sequels and Other Remake Attempts

The original 1960 movie led to three follow-up films: Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969) and The Magnificent Seven Ride! (1972). While Yul Brynner reprised his role as Chris Adams in the 1966 sequel, George Kennedy and Lee Van Cleef took over the role in the later films.

The new MGM+ series isn’t the first TV adaptation of the film. A previous show aired on CBS in the late 1990s and lasted for two seasons.

The 2016 film was directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Nic Pizzolatto alongside Richard Wenk. It featured a star-studded cast including Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, and Peter Sarsgaard. While the remake received varied opinions, critics generally appreciated the performances and exciting action.

The Magnificent Seven reboot doesn’t have a release date.
