The Madness ending, explained
As a seasoned gamer with a knack for unraveling complex narratives, I dived headfirst into the whirlwind that is “The Madness” streaming on Netflix. This eight-episode ride was as tumultuous as a game of Dark Souls on Nightmare mode, but instead of battling demons and dragons, I was chasing truth and justice.
Check out “The Madness,” starring Colman Domingo, now available on Netflix! I binge-watched the entire eight-episode run of this Netflix original miniseries and found it mind-boggling. There are numerous red herrings in this story, so I’ve broken down how each main plotline is resolved in the season finale titled “No More Madness.
As a gamer taking a breather from my hectic life as a Philly TV host, I decide to escape to the serene Poconos for some peace and quiet to pen my book. However, tranquility turns into turmoil when I unwittingly stumble upon a chilling murder scene. The plot thickens as events unfold, leaving me accused of the crime I merely stumbled upon.
The story kicks off at that point, but it doesn’t end there. It’s quite an adventure as Muncie sets out to clear his name and unravel the mystery. To achieve this, Muncie must identify Mark Simon’s killer and subsequently persuade the authorities to take action.
Spoilers ahead for The Madness on Netflix!
Who really killed Mark Simon?
In “The Madness,” I found myself pondering that crucial query for nearly eight episodes. However, it’s revealed earlier in the series, yet its significance is profoundly felt in the finale. The enigmatic billionaire, Rodney Kraintz, orchestrated Mark’s demise due to two reasons: one, Mark and his extremist group, The Forge, were becoming increasingly unmanageable; two, Mark was gathering evidence against Rodney, a fact that posed a significant threat to the latter’s illicit activities.
In the scene, Muncie unexpectedly witnessed a murder, and subsequently, it was Rodney, as revealed by Julia Jayne (Alison Wright), who attempted to pin the crime on Muncie. This is what set off the chain of events that followed. FBI agent Franco Quinones (John Ortiz) was delving into this aspect of the investigation, but he had a slight misdirection. His primary focus was on Stu Magnusson (Bradley Whitford), however, it was actually Julia, Rodney’s fixer, who was orchestrating everything behind the scenes.
It was actually Don Sloss Jr., the individual whom Muncie had killed at the pond, along with another person, who carried out the murder of Mark Simon. However, this act was done on behalf of Rodney and Julia.
Later, let me remind you that Julia had murdered Stu, Don, and attempted to kill Muncie. However, Muncie escaped by leaping off a cliff. This situation brings us up-to-date in episode 8. Muncie remains on the run, but he possesses proof implicating Julia in these crimes. Meanwhile, Julia is still under orders to eliminate Muncie, or she’ll be targeted next.
I feel like that’s important to recognize before we continue.
Does Elena die?
At the end of The Madness, a dramatic scene unfolds: Julia Jayne storms into Isiah’s cigar shop, where Elena is secreted away. During the ensuing scuffle, Isiah gets wounded but manages to live. In retaliation, Elena fights with Julia and ends up killing her, but in the process, Elena herself is shot. Severely injured, she is quickly taken to the hospital, and there’s uncertainty about her survival.
In time, it was discovered that Elena would make a full recovery, which meant she didn’t pass away, although it seemed like a near-death situation.
Honestly, I’m so happy that the creative team chose to keep Elena alive. This series is dark enough, and if Muncie was responsible in any way for Elena’s death, I don’t know how I would have felt about that. I don’t think I would have liked this series nearly as much.
Demetrius tries to kill Rodney Kraintz
Following the handover of the USB drive containing damaging evidence against billionaire Rodney Kraintz to both the police and FBI, Muncie chooses CNN as his platform for a final report and discussion on being wrongfully accused. This doesn’t sit right with Demetrius, who is determined that Kraintz should face justice for his actions.
Following Lucie revealing the location of Rodney’s New York office, Demetrius retrieves his father’s firearm with the intention of exacting revenge and punishing him for the anguish he inflicted, particularly on Elena. Fortunately, Muncie manages to reach the office before Demetrius and disarms him instead.
Rather than departing, Muncie encounters Rodney and comes close to ending his life, but Muncie recognizes the similarities between his own tale and that of his father. He opts against taking Rodney’s life.
That doesn’t mean that Rodney gets out of this alive, though.
Rodney Kraintz is killed
Following Lucie providing additional details to the FBI, the members of The Forge are taken into custody and face charges for their wrongdoings. Lucie desires justice not only for them but also for herself.
Regarding accountability, Kraintz manages to have the charges dropped in relation to Mark Simon’s death. Subsequently, he is fatally shot by an unknown assassin. The identity of the killer remains a mystery, yet the cycle of events continues unabated.
Revitalize continues its operation funding congressmen and spreading disinformation.
Muncie reconnects with his family and gets his priorities right
In the concluding scene of “The Madness“, Muncie prepares a barbecue in the park with his children Kallie (Gabrielle Graham) and Demetrius. This, it seems, was his intended role, rather than striving for recognition and global change on a cable news channel. Now off the screen, he has transitioned into teaching or academic roles, dedicating himself to enriching his community.
Even though they might feel lonely, it isn’t the case. Elena, who is hale and hearty, strolls through the park to join them. As for Muncie, the insanity that once haunted him has vanished, at least for now.
And, that’s where the series ends!
I’m unsure about my feelings towards the finale of “The Madness”. While there were aspects that were captivating and worthy of praise, the overall impression might not be universally positive. However, it seems incredibly pertinent to current events in the U.S. and globally.
