Be warned, this contains spoilers for the first three episodes of The Madison. In the first episode, “Pilot,” Taylor Sheridan includes a nod to Robert Redford. With The Madison, Sheridan is expanding beyond the Yellowstone universe and introducing a new family. The series follows Stacy and Preston Clyburn, played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell, as they establish themselves in Montana. While initially thought to be a sequel to Yellowstone, Paramount+ has confirmed that The Madison tells a completely separate story.
Considered to be Taylor Sheridan’s most personal work to date, The Madison tells the story of the Clyburn family as they navigate life between New York and Montana, centered around the Madison River. The first episode, “Pilot,” powerfully introduces the tragic event that drives the rest of the series. Surprisingly, the episode ends not with typical credits, but with a touching tribute: “In Loving Memory of ROBERT REDFORD.”
Taylor Sheridan’s Connection To Robert Redford Explained
Robert Redford wasn’t involved in the new show, The Madison. The acclaimed actor, producer, and director, who worked for nearly seventy years and received numerous awards, passed away in 2025 at the age of 89. Although he had no connection to The Madison – it began filming after his death – he shared a history with the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan. Sheridan originally asked Redford to play John Dutton III in Yellowstone when he was first pitching the series to HBO.
It was unexpected, but Robert Redford agreed to star in the show. However, even after he was cast – a condition HBO had set for funding – the network ultimately decided not to move forward with the project. The show, eventually titled Yellowstone, ended up on Paramount+, with Kevin Costner as the head of the Dutton family. Redford is a well-known figure in Westerns, having starred in classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Jeremiah Johnson, and The Electric Horseman. He’s also a producer of the highly-rated Dark Winds.
Why Redford Is Thematically Important To The Madison
Paramount Press
Robert Redford’s connection to The Madison goes beyond simply portraying John Dutton III or being a Western film legend. His genuine commitment to environmental causes deeply influenced the show’s storyline, particularly Preston’s passion for fishing, the Madison River, and conservation. Like Redford, Preston—and his brother-in-law, Paul, played by Matthew Fox—valued a simple life in Montana so much that he would leave his privileged life in New York City to be there.
Beyond being a phenomenal actor and director, Robert Redford was a dedicated advocate for the environment, and I think that side of him is often overlooked. For fifty years, he served on the board of the Natural Resources Defense Council, and he really used his celebrity to bring attention to crucial issues like protecting our public lands in the West, wildlife conservation, and ensuring environmental justice for Native American communities. His work with the NRDC led to some major wins for conservation, and honestly, it doesn’t surprise me at all that The Madison pays tribute to him. Considering the film centers around a commitment to preserving a specific landscape, honoring Redford’s lifelong dedication to conservation feels incredibly fitting.
