Beware, spoilers ahead for the season 1 finale of The Madison, titled “I Give Me Permission”! The creators and cast of Taylor Sheridan’s new Western series explain how the finale lays the groundwork for season 2. The Madison had a unique release: the first three episodes became available on Paramount+ on March 14th, followed by the remaining three episodes a week later on March 21st.
I just got the scoop – season two of The Madison is a go! Filming has finished, and we’ll be seeing much more of the Clyburn family. This season deals with the aftermath of a huge loss – Preston Clyburn (Kurt Russell) has passed away, and his wife, Stacy (Michelle Pfeiffer), along with their daughters Abigail (Beau Garrett) and Paige (Elle Chapman), are grappling with grief. The whole family – including Paige’s husband, Russell (Patrick J. Adams), and Abigail’s kids, Bridgette (Amiah Miller) and Macy (Alaina Pollock) – heads to Montana, where Preston died, hoping to find some peace and figure out their next steps. It sounds like a really emotional season!
The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Christina Alexandra Voros, the director of all twelve episodes of The Madison, and stars Beau Garrett, Patrick J. Adams, and Amiah Miller. They discussed how the season one finale of The Madison leads into the events of season two. Here are some highlights from their interviews:
As the director of the entire series, Christina Voros (who you might recognize from Yellowstone) really emphasizes that the Clyburn family is the heart of the show – everyone’s connected, and a lot of the mysteries hanging over season one get satisfying answers in season two. Honestly, when she first read the script, it moved her to tears! She told THR that this project felt particularly special for her, especially as an East Coaster who found love with a cowboy (her husband, Jason Owen, who also worked on the show with the animals) and ended up living in Texas and Montana while filming Westerns. She’s never felt such a strong personal connection to a project, and it clearly shines through in her work. It’s a truly unique show for creator Taylor Sheridan, but for Voros, it hit very close to home.
Voros was particularly drawn to the story of Abby, Stacy’s divorced daughter and mother to Bridgette Miller and Macy Pollack, played by Garrett. He found the scenes between Abby and Sheriff Van, played by Ben Schnetzer, amusing, noting they reminded him of early conversations with his partner, Jason.
Abby and Van shared a strong connection in Montana, but a tough conversation revealed how challenging their relationship could be. Abby returned to New York City, leaving their future uncertain, though a final phone call hinted at possibilities for season two. According to director Schnetzer, Christina Haack brought a nuanced understanding to the story. It’s a complex love story between two people with full lives, which creates both tension and intrigue. Their connection is passionate at times, and they face forces pulling them apart at others.
Garrett describes Christina as captivating, both as a person and in the story unfolding for Abby and Van. He notes that season two reveals a softer, happier side to Abby, a sense of joy and rediscovered life that wasn’t present in the first season. It was enjoyable to explore this new dimension of her character.
According to Adams, the next season of the show will take place both in Montana and New York simultaneously. While most of the story will be set in Montana, the characters will be exploring their identities—both individually and in relation to one another—in a complex and evolving situation. Adams prefers not to reveal too many details about how they ended up there.
According to Bridgette, played by Miller, the first season focuses on a family rediscovering each other and learning to cope with challenges, while the second season shows them rebuilding their lives and strengthening their bonds.
Christina Voros, a long-time director on Yellowstone, has a deep personal connection to the story of The Madison, making her perfectly suited to direct Taylor Sheridan’s film about a grieving family and the beauty of Montana. Her own experience of meeting her husband while working on Yellowstone mirrors the connection between the character Abigail and Montana deputy Van Davis (Ben Schnetzer).
Abigail, a New Yorker, and Van, a Montana cowboy, ended their short-lived romance, agreeing it wasn’t worth changing their lifestyles for each other. But the season one finale of The Madison left the door open when Abigail reached out to Van for help after Paige’s arrest. Beau Garrett suggests Abigail will return to Montana, hoping to find the “happiness and joy” she was missing in New York with Van.
Patrick J. Adams says season 2 of The Madison will continue to split its time between Montana and New York, but will feature more of Montana, similar to season 1. The show implies that the Clyburn family – and each member individually – will find the peace and recovery they need through the beautiful Montana scenery that Prescott cherished.
The first season of The Madison concluded with Stacy deciding to move to Montana instead of New York, a decision she’d made after Prescott’s death. According to Amiah Miller, the second season will likely focus on the Clyburn family “rebuilding” and “reconnecting,” though they’ll still face challenges, conflicts, and grief as they cope with the loss of their father – ultimately strengthening their family bond.
