The Lore of Riven by Rival: “With the release of Arcane, there is a real appetite for the lore side”
The Lore of Riven, crafted uniquely for the League of Legends fanbase, is a masterpiece by content maker Rival. Here’s a chat with him you might find interesting.
For 15 years, League of Legends has been a game that boasts a thriving community brimming with gifted individuals like Rival. A captivating production titled “The Story of Riven” chronicles Riven’s life journey, focusing on her quest for reconciliation with her past and the traumas she faced. Esports.gg recently interviewed Rival about the entire creative process behind this video, which is now available to watch on YouTube.
A tribute piece for Riven
In this video, I, as a fan, embark on a journey with a Noxian soldier. This soldier is being guided through self-discovery, where she questions her identity, and her long-held beliefs are challenged. The video ultimately shatters everything she thought she knew about herself and her origins. Rival, an Australian League of Legends content creator, is the genius behind this captivating piece.
As a dedicated Riven player and the top-ranked Riven on our server last season, this tribute piece is a special acknowledgment of her character. Having played Riven for nearly a decade, it’s significant for me to create League of Legends content that celebrates her now.
In his words, “The less time I spent playing the game and the more content I produced, my idea evolved into creating a tribute piece in honor of her. My aim was to express my admiration for her as a champion and Riot Games too, all while providing something entertaining for the fans.
2011 saw the debut of Riven alongside other renowned champions like Fizz, Graves, Leona, Rumble, Vayne, Lee Sin, Caitlyn, and numerous others. During the same year, Viktor and Skarner – both recently given a Visual and Gameplay Update (VGU) – were also introduced.
As an avid player, I’m thrilled to share that Riot Games has hinted at their plans to revamp several of the game’s older champions, potentially including the formidable Riven, in the upcoming years.
The Lore of Riven: a year of hard work and details
According to Rival, since the upcoming storyline heavily focuses on Noxus and Riven is a character originating from Noxus, it was an ideal moment for its release. The lore of Riven has been under development for nearly a year now, beginning at the end of March last year.
By November, our project was almost finished with the scriptwriting and direction phases, and Rover Studio started creating the artwork. Once all the artworks were finalized, we moved on to the editing process. As Rival shared, he and his editor put in 12 hours every day during this phase. Frequently, our conversations revolved around minute details that could significantly impact the final product.
Riven’s Lore is fully realized following over 4,500 intricate layers, and it has left many details behind. Already, Riot Games’ Pu Liu, Game Director for League of Legends, has expressed enthusiasm, commenting on X: “This is truly impressive!
The power of sound effects
In the video, characters like Irelia and LeBlanc briefly show up, too. A particularly engaging segment was witnessing aspects of Yasuo’s past. The thrill of encountering and battling Riven, complete with intricate details and sound enhancements, was fantastic.
The plot takes you deep into an engaging journey, and it’s hard to realize that the video lasts over 20 minutes. Rival unveiled some early sketches of their fight on X. Compare the initial with the final version of the confrontation between them, brother Yone, and brother Z.
In a simpler and more conversational manner, “We aimed to enhance the emotional impact of scenes by using sound effects and music in such a way that they deepen your connection with the artwork beyond what it can achieve on its own.” After wrapping up The Lore of Riven, Rival took some time to express gratitude towards Rover Studio and his editor Cloud. With over 147k views on YouTube, this content creator teased his upcoming project called Kindred.
A lot of love from the community
Following overwhelmingly positive responses from the community, Rival didn’t conclude the tale of Riven but instead delved into another captivating story – that of Kindred. On platform X, Rival unveiled a sketch of Kindred, stating, “I aim to illustrate how Kindred transforms into the familiar figure we recognize.” The content creator clarifies this intention.
He expressed his intense enthusiasm for such content and the overwhelming encouragement he received has motivated him to persist with it. Today, he finished drafting the script and initial sketches for Book 2: The Grim Harvester of Runeterra.
The response to our video is absolutely astounding, and it’s what keeps us motivated to carry on. With the debut of Arcane, it’s clear that there’s a genuine interest in exploring the lore behind League of Legends’ 169 characters and their diverse worlds. This gives Rival ample opportunities for storytelling.
Additionally, I received positive feedback from content producers similar to Dumbs. Hearing him describe it as the top content produced by any League content creator this year left me in awe. I chuckled at his comment, and even though it’s still January, his praise is truly inspiring.
The Lore of Riven: What comes next?
Moving forward, we’re planning to give this series a boost with engaging elements like short films, quick explanatory clips, and intriguing video snippets. By 2025, our goal is to deliver high-quality League of Legends content through Rival.
We can hardly wait to watch as this project unfolds! With all these skilled individuals dedicating effort to celebrate their beloved game, it’s simply awe-inspiring. Now that “The Lore of Riven” by Rival has been released, remember to take a look and share your thoughts!
