The Little Mermaid takes a bite out of man in upcoming Lionsgate horror movie

As someone who grew up with Disney classics and has a soft spot for the horror genre, I must say the recent trend of reimagining these childhood favorites as terrifying tales is both intriguing and slightly unsettling. The Twisted Childhood Universe, with its killer Winnie-the-Pooh, has already hooked me, and I can’t wait to see what they do with Bambi and Peter Pan next year.

Reimagining beloved children’s tales with a chilling twist has been a popular trend in horror for quite some time now. However, the last few years have taken this concept to a whole new level with the introduction of the “Darkened Childhood Saga,” which includes a sinister Winnie-the-Pooh and several other characters from the Hundred Acre Wood, as well as upcoming terrifying adaptations of Bambi, Peter Pan, and others.

Not only that, but when the second “Steamboat Willie” (the short film introducing Mickey and Minnie Mouse to the public) entered the public domain, filmmakers began creating chilling reinterpretations featuring Mickey as a horror character.

After departing from the Twisted Childhood Universe, Lionsgate is creating their own chilling interpretation of The Little Mermaid, inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s story. Blood Disgusting unveiled an exclusive sneak peek at this upcoming film, set to debut in digital and on-demand platforms this December. This R-rated retelling (now free for adaptation due to being in the public domain) of the classic story shares similarities with Disney’s adaptation, but Lionsgate’s version is promised as a “thought-provoking twist” on the fairy tale.

In the reimagined tale of The Little Mermaid, the character previously known as “Prince Eric” is now portrayed as “Dr. Eric Prince”, an archaeologist embarking on an expedition in the Caribbean. During this journey, he and his students stumble upon an ancient temple, where they encounter a woman of mystery from the sea. However, the trailer hints that she may not be as benign as a sweet-tempered mermaid, but rather possesses a potentially deadly allure of a siren.

Without a doubt, if remakes that twist your beloved childhood stories into eerie thrillers excite you, get ready for even more chills in the upcoming year! (I’m just as eager to see them!)

The Little Mermaid releases digitally on December 17, 2024, and the Twisted Childhood Universe is gearing up to release multiple new movies in 2025, including Bambi: The Reckoning and Pinocchio: Unstrung. On January 24, 2025, Terrifier star David Howard Thornton will play the slasher version of Steamboat Willie in the film of the same name.
