The Legend Of Zelda Movie: Comparing Link & Zelda’s Live-Action Looks To The Games

Fans are finally getting a live-action movie based on Nintendo and Sony’s popular game, The Legend of Zelda. Wes Ball, who directed The Maze Runner, is directing the film and has chosen two new actors to play the beloved characters, Link and Zelda.

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link and Bo Bragason will be Princess Zelda in the upcoming film. Nintendo recently shared the first images of the young actors in their costumes and makeup, after filming started in November 2025.

Okay, so whenever a movie tries to bring a beloved story to life, you know everyone’s going to be comparing how the characters look on screen to how we picture them from the games. As a huge Zelda fan, I’ve been doing the same! Let’s dive into what Zelda and Link actually look like in the new movie compared to their video game appearances.

Link’s Live-Action Movie Appearance Compared To The Legend Of Zelda Games

The first images of Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link in The Legend of Zelda movie reveal a very classic and faithful interpretation of the character. He’s portrayed with long, messy blonde hair that falls past his elf-like ears, and his traditionally blue eyes, staying true to the character’s iconic look.

Link’s outfit includes a green tunic with short sleeves, worn over a white long-sleeved shirt. He also has brown gloves and pants that are brown, green, or tan. The movie version seems to have made his tunic shorter, ending well above his knees.

He isn’t wearing his classic green pointed hat in these photos. Hopefully, it will appear in the movie later on. If not, it seems the filmmakers might be taking inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which doesn’t feature that hat.

While the movie may have taken some visual cues from Link, it doesn’t seem to be using his iconic blue tunic from Breath of the Wild throughout the entire film.

Although Link isn’t seen with his sword and shield, he’s wearing the familiar brown strap used to carry them in the games. It’s safe to assume he’ll have his iconic weapons at some point in the film.

When it comes to a live-action adaptation, Link’s look is most similar to his design in the 2006 game, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. He wears pants – unlike in some of the older games – and his outfit isn’t entirely white underneath the green tunic, as it was in Ocarina of Time.

Because the Link design from Twilight Princess is the foundation for how he looks in most recent games, it’s logical the movie would use that familiar appearance, especially for newer fans. Although Link’s look has changed over time, his essential features remain consistent, which makes creating a live-action version that fans will appreciate a little easier.

Princess Zelda’s Live-Action Movie Appearance Compared To The Games

Okay, so with Zelda, it’s tricky because her look in the games has changed so much over the years. That means the movie folks had a lot of options when figuring out what Zelda would wear! But if there’s one thing you can always count on with Zelda, it’s that she’s usually rocking some shade of pink. It’s kind of her signature color, honestly.

However, the movie version looks different. Princess Zelda wears a long blue dress with brown gloves, dark pants, and boots. She has a necklace, but it doesn’t match any of the designs from the games or look like something from Hylian traditions.

As a big Zelda fan, I was really happy with how closely they captured her look – the long blonde hair, blue eyes, and those iconic pointy ears were spot on! Though, it was a little surprising to see her without a tiara or crown, and she wasn’t wearing any armor either. It’s a different take on her usual appearance, but still recognizable!

The movie opted for a blue color scheme for Zelda, a departure from her traditional pink, signaling an influence from her look in Breath of the Wild. However, instead of recreating that costume exactly, the filmmakers streamlined the design, leaving out the white and gold details.

The upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie is giving Princess Zelda a more familiar look by arming her with a bow and arrow. While this is her signature weapon in the games, she hasn’t often been depicted using it in previous adaptations.

Zelda is usually depicted using a magical bow and arrows that appear when she needs them, instead of physically carrying them. The upcoming live-action movie might show Zelda starting with a regular bow and arrows, before she eventually obtains the more powerful, iconic weapon from the video games.

Both Link and Zelda have influenced the design of characters in The Legend of Zelda, but Link’s look is more closely based on his video game appearance. However, because it’s easier to change costumes in a movie, we might still see Bragason wearing a pink outfit as a nod to the character’s history in the games.
