The Legend of Zelda live-action movie gets disappointing release window update
As a lifelong gamer and avid fan of The Legend of Zelda franchise, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as I read about the upcoming live-action movie. Growing up with Link and Zelda has been an integral part of my childhood, and seeing these characters come to life on the big screen is something I’ve longed for since I first picked up that old NES controller.
Previously, it became known that Nintendo in collaboration with Arad Productions were working on a live-action film adaptation of the esteemed video game series, The Legend of Zelda. This project is under the direction of Wes Ball, who has previously directed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The Legend of Zelda follows the adventures of a young swordsman named Link as he battles evil to rescue Princess Zelda and protect Hyrule; each game adds its unique spin, but the main narrative generally stays consistent. As a popular video game franchise dating back to 1986, The Legend of Zelda has garnered an immense fanbase, making the news of a movie highly anticipated.
We now have a rough idea of when we might get to see the movie, although it’s not exact…yet. The team at IGN is always on top of video game news, and they recently discovered a financial report from Nintendo that hints at a potential release window for “The Legend of Zelda” film. However, the movie will come out within this decade, but we don’t have an exact date yet.
The report delves deeper into Nintendo’s “Visual Content” segment, praising the incredible success of the movie adaptation of Super Mario Bros., watched by over 170 million people and earning more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing video game film ever. Interestingly, Nintendo has announced plans to produce a sequel to Super Mario Bros. in 2026. The report also hints at Nintendo’s future projects, as they are currently working on a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, with a tentative release date set for some time in the 20XX era.
That’s not something you can brim with enthusiasm over just yet, but it’s encouraging to learn that Nintendo intends to launch The Legend of Zelda movie within the next five years. As for its quality, we’ll have to wait and see.
Which movie will come first: Zelda or another Planet of the Apes?
Considering that the upcoming “The Legend of Zelda” movie has some time before its release, it sparks curiosity: might we see another “Planet of the Apes” sequel prior to this? Director Wes Ball is involved with “Zelda,” but following the success of his film “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” 20th Century Studios seems quite optimistic about creating a follow-up for “Apes.
Recently, Steve Asbell, CEO of 20th Century, shared insights on their strategy for managing four major sci-fi franchises – “Planet of the Apes”, “Alien”, “Predator”, and James Cameron’s “Avatar”. The studio has been carefully planning how to release these films in a way that avoids prolonged wait times for fans. This strategic approach became crucial after 20th Century was acquired by Disney in 2019. By finding the right balance among these big franchises, the studio can also produce more original films. Asbell hinted that we might see a new “Apes” film sooner than expected.
Job one was figuring out these franchise movies first and coming up with the right cadence of Avatar, Apes, Alien and Predator specifically. Getting those right was the first part, which we’ve done now. And so that idea is to be able to say, “Okay, we know when the Avatar movies are coming. We know now about Predator. There’ll be another Apes in ‘27, let’s just say.” So knowing where we can plan those franchises, it helps us look to see and ask what kinds of original movies in terms of genre do we want to test the marketplace with?
It seems Asbell is musing about a possible new “Planet of the Apes” movie in 2027, which suggests to me that conversations regarding the next installment might be happening behind the scenes.
In May, when the movie “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” came out, Ball mentioned to Variety that he was aiming for a trilogy of “Apes” films. When Variety brought up his other commitment to “Zelda”, Ball considered it a desirable challenge.
It’s intriguing to observe how this situation unfolds. The advantage of Wes Ball diving into a ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ sequel is that much of the groundwork for creating the world had been laid in the initial film, whereas with ‘The Legend of Zelda’, he’ll be embarking on a fresh journey to bring the cherished video game series to life on the silver screen. This has been likened to how Christopher Nolan filmed ‘Inception’ and ‘The Prestige’ between new installments of his ‘Batman’ trilogy, according to Variety. Therefore, Ball may take a brief respite from the apes to visit Hyrule. Regardless, we can expect significant work from director Wes Ball in the coming times.
