The Legend of Vox Machina is thrilling thus far—What can we expect from season 4?

As a cinephile with over three decades of indulgence in the realm of fantasy and animation, I must say that “The Legend of Vox Machina” has truly captured my heart and piqued my curiosity. Having followed the Critical Role sessions since their inception, it’s fascinating to witness how they’ve transformed the tabletop gameplay into a captivating animated series with each passing season.

The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated series with three finished seasons available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, with a fourth on the way. The show is based on a series of Dungeons & Dragons sessions put on by the members of Critical Role, a group of voice actors who have spun their hang-out sessions into a media empire.

Based on the fact that seasons 1, 2, and 3 of “The Legend of Vox Machina” each spanned approximately 30 live Critical Role sessions, it’s reasonable to anticipate that season 4 will encompass episodes 73 through around 100. Since the Vox Machina campaign consists of a total of 121 episodes, this suggests that the creators and voice actors of Critical Role might be considering a fifth season to wrap up the story, or they could choose to include all the remaining episodes in season 4. However, since they’re also working on an animated adaptation of The Mighty Nein, which followed Vox Machina, it’s possible that they may decide to focus more on that project instead.

So far, the animated series has omitted entire gameplay sessions, like extended shopping sprees and the characters playing spin the bottle. By excluding such relatively minor events, there might be an opportunity to intensify the build-up towards a grand showdown with Vecna, one of the major antagonists in the series, during season 4.

There have been requests from some enthusiasts for Mark Hamill to voice the character known as Vecna, a well-liked Dungeons & Dragons monster. Often referred to as ‘The Silent One’, Vecna’s presence was subtly suggested in the final episode of season 3.

What to expect in The Legend of Vox Machina season 4, beat by beat

Apart from Vecna, I’m keen to see how the show will handle significant moments like characters Pike (Ashley Johnson) and Scanlan (Sam Riegel) getting married, or if this is an element they’ve decided to alter. The cast has hinted in interviews that numerous adjustments have been made to enhance the animated series, making it a more visually striking adaptation of the original narrative and filled with surprises for fans who watched the live play sessions. For instance, in the live play, Raishan was unable to possess Thordak’s dragon form. However, in the animated version, she performed the ritual and transformed into an undead dragon, which I find much more thrilling on screen. Given this, I anticipate the series will maintain its high-octane action and intrigue. Additionally, I’m intrigued by Pike’s family curse, as it presents opportunities for emotional relationship drama, so I assume they’ll capitalize on that aspect.

In the upcoming events, we might witness more character farewells. The departure of Vax (Liam O’Brien) is anticipated to be a moving and poignant moment, given that during the live play episode Critical Role, Liam O’Brien and Sam Riegel were visibly emotional. Scanlan had intended to revive Vax, but another spell interfered, making it unlikely. I find it hard to believe that this won’t be included in the storyline.

In a simplified manner, Keyleth (played by Marisha Ray) started off as a character who was perceived as weak due to her hesitancy and low self-assurance in the live game play. However, in the animated series, she displays additional strength while still retaining her initial qualities of indecisiveness and lack of confidence. For the upcoming season 4, it’s anticipated that she will finish her Aramenté and acquire the ability to transform into different shapes. I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing some fantastic animation for this transformation.

While Vax is my personal favorite, it’s clear that Percy is a character that resonates with many fans. With Taliesin Jaffe delivering such compelling performances, I can’t wait to learn more about Percy and if he’ll continue to use his ‘pistols’ (guns) in future scenes.

I love that in season 3, cast member Marisha Ray wrote episode 7. It’s good to see cast members step in to give their own spins on the storyline. I’m curious to know if any of the others will get a chance to do some writing in season 4, although the thought of Sam Riegel writing one sounds weird. Have you seen some of his convention costumes? He is a colorful person and plays such outrageous characters. His sponsorship skits in the live play shows gets silly and fun. We could count on him to embellish a little…okay, a lot!

From my perspective, this show has been an exhilarating rollercoaster ride so far, filled with humor and non-stop action. Those one-liners are certainly not to be missed! As for the next season, while there’s no official word yet, speculation points towards its arrival on Amazon Prime Video anywhere between fall 2025 and spring 2026. Fingers crossed it comes sooner rather than later, but patience is a virtue I’m still learning!
