The Legend of Vox Machina goes to hell in official trailer for season 3

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of tabletop RPG experience under my belt, I can confidently say that “The Legend of Vox Machina” is a breath of fresh air in the world of animated series adaptations. The show’s roots in the live-streamed Dungeons & Dragons campaigns by Critical Role make it unique and engaging, offering an authentic gaming experience that few other shows can match.

The Vox Machina Saga, derived from a popular Dungeons & Dragons live-stream by the lively group of voice artists known as Critical Role, is charging into its third chapter. Converting Critical Role’s campaign into an animated series was a fitting decision; the voice actors can showcase their talents at their finest, and animation offers the freedom to explore storylines that would be challenging in live-action. In season 3, arriving in October, the team embarks on a journey to the underworld! Check out the trailer above.

I may not be an expert on Critical Role, but it’s unclear if what we’re seeing is actually hell or just a fiery refuge. In the realm of Dungeons & Dragons, there are numerous infernal realms. At their last encounter, the Vox Machina group was attempting to defeat the Chroma Conclave, a gang of dragons causing chaos across the land. It seems odd for one of these dragons to reside in hell given its fiery nature.

In the first two seasons of “The Legend of Vox Machina,” we’ve seen a close adherence to the original Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. However, actors Travis Willingham (Grog) and Sam Riegel (Scanlan) have hinted that the series will venture beyond the source material in season 3. This time around, our characters are expected to stray from familiar paths, and new characters not present in the original campaign may make an appearance on the show.

Occasionally, it can feel frustrating when an adaptation deviates from its source, but given that those responsible for the alteration were also the ones who originated the work, it’s not always standard practice to stick to the rules. After all, Vox Machina was never a typical adaptation; it evolved from an improvised Dungeons & Dragons campaign. So, who decides the guidelines when you’re adapting an impromptu role-playing game?

The team plans to carry forward this same enthusiasm into a fresh Critical Role series, based on the Dungeons & Dragons campaign they streamed following the conclusion of the Vox Machina campaign: brace yourselves for The Mighty Nein, releasing…at some point. Meanwhile, for those eagerly awaiting season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina, it premieres on Amazon Prime Video on October 3.
