The Latest Netflix Documentary About A Notorious Serial Killer Just Dropped, And It’s Terrifying To Me For A Whole New Reason

The new Netflix documentary, Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers, starts off strangely because Aileen Wuornos seems surprisingly likable. This film is just the latest in a growing number of serial killer documentaries on Netflix. While Wuornos’ story is famous – especially after Charlize Theron’s Oscar-winning performance in the movie Monster – this documentary revealed something new to me about her, and it was more unsettling than anything I’ve seen in other interviews with serial killers.

Wuornos Is So Cheery In The Interviews

I was surprised while rewatching the documentary Monster by how genuinely cheerful Aileen Wuornos could be. I’ve seen a lot of the Netflix series Conversations with a Killer – maybe too much – and in those interviews, it’s easy to see the darkness hiding behind the public personas of serial killers like John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, and David Berkowitz. Their evil always seems close to the surface. Wuornos feels different, though. Even though she was just as terrible as any other serial killer, she doesn’t come across as purely cold-blooded, and the documentary sometimes shows a different side to her personality.

During the interview, she came across as friendly, attentive, and surprisingly non-intimidating. Maybe it’s because female serial killers are so uncommon, but she didn’t project the same sense of threat as male serial killers often do. Charlize Theron was fantastic in Monster, and her portrayal had a level of menace that I didn’t sense in the interviews with Wuormos, featured in Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers. Wuormos displayed the same lack of regret as other killers, but it was delivered in a different way—less frightening, and honestly, that made it even more unsettling.

Netflix Is Really Leaning Into Serial Killers

Like a lot of people, I find serial killers strangely captivating. I’m not entirely sure why – perhaps it’s because I naturally tend to see the best in people. I’m a trusting and optimistic person, so exploring the darker aspects of the human mind is fascinating. It’s clear Netflix understands this widespread interest, given the amount of true crime content they offer, including stories like that of Aileen Wuornos.

Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monster’ series has recently focused on Ed Gein, following its previous coverage of Jeffrey Dahmer. Netflix’s ‘Mindhunter’ was a critically acclaimed show, and its depictions of killers like Ed Kemper and Charles Manson were particularly unsettling. Many viewers are hoping for a third season of ‘Mindhunter’. Also worth noting is the ‘Conversations with a Killer’ series, which is both informative and frightening.

Even though I’m excited about some of the horror movies coming out in 2025, I don’t usually consider myself a horror fan. I actually prefer being frightened by true stories and real-life events. I’m not sure what that says about me, but I’ll definitely keep watching shows and movies like Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers.
