The Last of Us set photos reveal new insight into future seasons
As a dedicated fan who’s weathered the post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us more times than I can count, I’ve grown accustomed to the heart-wrenching stories, gut-punching twists, and nail-biting suspense this series delivers. With the leaked photos from the set of season 2, it seems we might be in for another emotional rollercoaster as Ellie embarks on her journey through post-apocalyptic Seattle, accompanied by her friend Jesse.
Pictures captured during the shooting of HBO’s The Last of Us this summer offer substantial hints regarding the show’s plot development for its second and third seasons, which will encompass the narrative of Naughty Dog’s video game The Last of Us: Part II. Let’s dive in together and guess what might lie ahead!
In the upcoming second season of the series, we’ll explore a post-apocalyptic Seattle, following the journey of characters like Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and others as they search for newcomer Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). The storyline will span across at least two seasons, with only seven episodes in the second season. In the game, players experience the roles of both Ellie and Abby, who are at odds with one another for reasons we’ll keep under wraps. It remains unclear how much of this journey the second season will cover or how the show will manage the dual perspective; whether it will switch between Ellie and Abby scenes, or if we’ll see the entirety of season 2 from Ellie’s point of view before moving to Abby in a potential third season.
Due to a Reddit-leaked photo, we now have some additional insight. In this image, Bella Ramsey portrays Ellie alongside debut actor Young Mazino, who takes on the role of Ellie’s friend Jesse. They can be seen standing on a gloomy street in worn raincoats, hinting that filming for the Seattle segment of Ellie’s journey is underway.
At present, we haven’t come across any photos showing Kaitlyn Dever as Abby in such a location, implying that HBO’s The Last of Us is sticking to the game’s sequence of events. They are likely to introduce Ellie’s story initially and then move on to Abby’s tale in season 3.
That’s not a guarantee — it’s possible that photos of Dever as Abby in Seattle simply haven’t gotten out — but that’s our guess. We’ll just have to follow along next year with bated breath as Ellie makes her way toward the aquarium where Abby is hiding out. Until that time, there’s only one thing we know for sure: experiencing The Last of Us is no less stressful the second time around. Expect the second season to air on HBO sometime early in 2025.
