The Last of Us Season 4: Showrunners Reveal Plans for More Seasons
As a dedicated cinephile, I eagerly awaited the penultimate episode of HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 last Sunday. Naturally, conversations about the pacing of this season ensued. Unlike its first season, which was a compact nine-episode series adapting the entirety of the initial video game into one season, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are opting for a different approach when it comes to adapting The Last of Us Part II. Given the expansive and intricate narrative of this second game, they’ve decided it would be better suited to multiple seasons. Intriguingly, the showrunners have hinted at having plans that extend beyond just Season 3, which HBO has already announced.
During an interview with Collider, the creators Mazin and Druckmann delved into how much of Ellie’s vengeance journey remains untold and the consequences of Abby’s decision to kill Joel at the start of the season. With just one episode remaining in Season 2, the series has adapted less than half the game content. The reduced number of episodes contributes to this, but Mazin hinted that Season 3 might have more episodes and also disclosed that there are intentions for a Season 4.
It’s quite possible that Season 3 will be extended compared to Season 2, given the unique direction of the storyline and the opportunities it presents. The aftermath of Joel’s death is particularly significant, serving as a powerful narrative bomb that keeps us focused. We might not be able to divert from this central event and explore a side story about Bill and Frank in the same way for Season 3. However, I can’t say for certain if this will always hold true. It’s more likely that we’ll have some additional freedom in Season 3. But rest assured, there’s no way this narrative can be fully concluded in a third season. Ideally, we’ll have done well enough to warrant another season, a fourth one, where we can wrap things up. That seems the most probable scenario.
HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ Has Plenty More Story To Tell
For those who’ve played “The Last of Us Part II”, it’s clear that Seattle holds another untold tale. In Season 2, we delve deeper into Ellie’s perspective, a character oblivious to the strife between the Washington Liberation Front and the Seraphites within Seattle. There are many details about this conflict that are purposefully kept hidden from viewers, and Mazin appears to have a well-thought-out strategy for expanding the universe of “The Last of Us” across multiple seasons, as he puts it.
In our approach, we’ve been planning ahead, considering not only Season 3 but also Season 4. Our aim is to maximize visibility wherever possible. We strive to make well-considered decisions, fundamentally analyzing each aspect of the project. For our initial season, the question was how to effectively convey this extensive story within a reasonable timeframe and budget. This season, we faced the challenge of utilizing source material that extends far beyond a single season.
It’s intriguing to consider whether “The Last of Us” will get a fourth season, given that many thought the early renewal for Season 3 suggested the series would conclude there. However, since Mazin and Druckmann hinted that the HBO show wouldn’t surpass the source material, it seems the series might not end yet. In fact, the showrunners have a grand vision to adapt the remaining parts of the second game over two additional seasons, indicating a promising future for “The Last of Us.
