Filming for Season 3 of HBO’s The Last of Us has begun, and we’re starting to see videos from the set. Season 2, which will air in 2025, covered the first part of the game The Last of Us Part II, focusing on Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and her journey for revenge. Because the game has a complex story, HBO and the show’s creators decided to split it into two seasons. This is largely because the game shifts its focus halfway through to a new character, Abby, who will be played by Kaitlyn Dever in the series.
With Season 3 now in production, actress Laura Bailey (Dever) will be the primary focus, exploring Abby’s experiences during the three days Ellie spent in Seattle before they met again, as shown at the end of Season 2. A short video posted on X shows Dever filming a scene with Kyriana Kratter on a rooftop, appearing to look around before the clip ends. Kratter will play Lev, a character from the game who plays a significant role in Abby’s story.
Abby’s storyline in The Last of Us Part II centers on her struggle with the violence she committed in Jackson, specifically when she sought revenge on Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal). The games and show consistently explore how violence breeds more violence – Joel’s past actions directly motivated Abby’s desire for retribution. Now, with the introduction of Lev as a key character, the show may start to parallel Joel’s character arc from the first season, focusing on Abby’s own growth and motivations. While many new actors have been cast for the current season, Lev is likely the most important addition.

While there were some reports early on in the series’ production that the show could go beyond three seasons, reception to how the first half of Part II was adapted in the second season, mixed with writer and executive producer Craig Mazin’s recent comments, seem to indicate that this third season may be its last. The production will more than likely cover all of Abby’s story in Part II, as she journeys through Seattle with Lev. Their relationship mirrors Joel and Ellie’s in the first game (and the first season of the show), making the casting of this character essential to the series as a whole.
The production value of the series doesn’t seem to have changed either, with impressive overgrown designs reflecting a post-apocalyptic Seattle well. It will be interesting to see how Mazin and the rest of the team behind the show will make the transition between lead characters as seamlessly as it is done in the game. The narrative shift was one of the biggest selling points of the game, and while controversial due to leaks at the time, it has been reevaluated as a masterpiece. Given how action-packed and dark Abby’s story in the game is compared to Ellie’s, there is plenty to look forward to in terms of tonal and thematic shifts in The Last of Us Season 3.
