The Last of Us Season 2: WLF vs Seraphites – The War for Seattle Explained
In the latest episode of “The Last of Us”, when Dina informs Ellie that the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) might be manageable for them, gamers will chuckle. However, by the end of the show, even spectators will share their laughter. As Ellie and Dina traverse Seattle in search of Abby during the episode, they’ll soon discover that the WLF is larger than anticipated, and another group controls the city as well, a fact that will ambush them both.
In The Last of Us Part II, when you control Ellie, your initial encounter with the WLF is through Abby and her companions in Jackson, as they are seeking revenge for Ellie’s father’s death. However, what Ellie doesn’t know is that Joel was merely a small personal target for the WLF; their main objective is a larger conflict with a cult called the Seraphites over control of Seattle. Both sides resort to extreme measures in this war, and although the aftermath remains uncertain at the game’s end, it appears that the final battle suggests a disastrous situation where both parties lose their humanity by committing horrendous war crimes for an ultimately fruitless cause. Now, HBO’s The Last of Us depicts these brutal actions unfolding.
The Washington Liberation Front (WLF), Explained
AKA Wolves, the WLF Is Seattle’s Biggest Militia That Finds an Enemy in Anyone
In Seattle, Washington, there exists a powerful militia group that once battled and triumphed against FEDRA, seizing control of the city. Initially a government agency in the old world, FEDRA transformed into a military force post-apocalypse, exercising authority over certain cities within the United States. Currently headed by Isaac Dixon, as depicted in the show “The Last of Us Part II”, this group, known as the WLF, is Abby’s closest affiliation. When she speaks to Joel about his code, she says, “We don’t target defenseless individuals.
The code seems to walk a delicate balance. In the second season, episode three, a band of Seraphites searching for refuge from conflict encounter ruthless aggressors known as “Wolves” (a term used by the Seraphites for the WLF). These assailants indiscriminately kill everyone, including the elderly, children, and possibly even infants. It remains uncertain whether Abby or her companions – Manny, Mel, Owen, or Nora – have committed similar atrocities against the Seraphites, given their history as Fireflies.
The Seraphites, Explained
AKA the Scars, the Seraphites Use Religious Propaganda to Instill Fear
In Season 2, Episode 3, the enigmatic cult known as the Seraphites is only scarcely understood, but that’s set to change. This episode introduces us to the cult through its slain members who speak of their “Prophet,” a woman revered by many as a divine figure who established the group decades ago. Although she’s been gone for ten years, some Seraphites believe she continues to watch over them today. However, a Seraphite father explains to his daughter that others in the cult view their spiritual leader more pragmatically.
A prophet isn’t a magician; they are individuals who perceive truths that others cannot see and communicate them fearlessly. Our Prophet was such an individual. To honor her memory, we adhere to her words, follow her teachings, but also ensure our own safety.
The individuals are easily identifiable by their almost indistinguishable outfits, which include brown cloaks and other somber, dark-colored garments. These people, both male and female, sport distinct hairstyles (a topic that will be discussed later): men keep their heads bald, while the women adorn a braided crown of hair. Additionally, they employ whistles to signal the presence of Wolves or demons, which they refer to as the infected. Their moniker, “Scars,” is a result of Glasgow smile scars that mark their cheeks.
Experiencing the conflict between the WLF and Seraphites during Season 2 will undoubtedly jolt Ellie and Dina out of their peaceful seclusion. Despite Ellie’s past struggles, she has spent the last five years living in a sheltered community away from the rest of the country. The challenges of navigating a city are already formidable, but dealing with two hostile factions to locate Abby adds another layer of difficulty.
