The Last of Us season 2 gets exciting release window update

As a die-hard fan who has been eagerly waiting for the return of “The Last of Us,” I can hardly contain my excitement! The news that season 2 is set to premiere in early 2025 feels like a lifeline in these trying times. It’s been a long, post-apocalyptic journey since we last saw Joel and Ellie, but the anticipation has only grown with each passing day.

In a recent interview following the Emmy Awards, HBO CEO Casey Bloys shared some intriguing insights about the release date of the second season of “The Last of Us.” Discussing various upcoming HBO projects with Deadline, he also touched on topics such as George R.R. Martin’s opinions about “House of the Dragon,” a potential 2026 or 2027 debut for the new “Harry Potter” series, and, most importantly, gave us some fresh updates on “The Last of Us.

Regarding when Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will resume their zombie-fighting adventures, along with the upcoming third season of the popular series “The White Lotus,” Bloys hinted, “I can’t reveal much at the moment, but I anticipate they’ll be airing during the first half of the year, making them eligible for Emmy nominations.

In order for a show to be eligible for the Emmys, it needs to have been broadcast prior to May 31st, 2025. This means we can expect to see both “The Last of Us” season 2 and “The White Lotus” season 3 air sometime in early summer or late spring of the upcoming year.

The Last of Us season 2 is coming in early 2025

The upcoming second season of “The Last of Us” will draw inspiration from the initial chapter of the critically acclaimed video game “The Last of Us Part II”. At present, the specific storylines that will be addressed in this season are undetermined. However, it’s anticipated that the events portrayed in the game will span over at least three seasons. Despite having just seven episodes, there’s hope that they’ll be so captivating that we can overlook the limited episode count and extended gap between seasons. As far as Bloys is concerned, “I’ve seen The Last of Us. I think everybody is going to be thrilled with what [co-creator] Craig [Mazin] is working on.

In a conversation with Deadline back in June 2024, Mazin explained that the narrative content from Part II of the game provided more story elements than the initial game. As a result, a significant aspect of our planning from the outset was determining how to distribute this extensive story across seasons. When structuring the story, we sought out natural dividing lines, and it turned out that this season’s narrative breakpoint seemed most appropriate after seven episodes.

Apart from Pascal and Ramsey, season 2 will bring back several familiar faces such as Gabriel Luna playing Tommy, Rutina Wesley portraying Maria, along with a host of fresh actors joining the cast. This new group includes Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Wright, who will reprise their video game character, Isaac.

We’ll be watching The Last of Us season 2 when it premieres sometime in early 2025!
