The actors who play Ellie and Abby in Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us have talked about what they’d like to see happen to their characters in the future. Five years ago, The Last of Us Part II followed Ellie, played by Ashley Johnson, as a nineteen-year-old seeking revenge on Abby, portrayed by Laura Bailey. The game was a difficult experience for both characters and ended with questions left unanswered, potentially setting the stage for The Last of Us Part III.
Even though director Neil Druckmann has repeatedly said a third The Last of Us game is unlikely, rumors of its development continue to spread. It’s unclear if a third game would follow the stories of Abby and Ellie, but actors Johnson and Bailey, who play those characters in the upcoming Prime Video series The Mighty Nein, recently shared their hopes for their characters’ futures. Both expressed a simple wish: “happiness.”
Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, shared that she didn’t have many opportunities to portray Ellie’s happiness while working on The Last of Us. Even though Ellie found a father figure in Joel by the end of the first game, she was constantly troubled by the fact that he lied to her about what happened in Salt Lake City, which strained their relationship before his death. The second game then focused on Ellie’s descent into darkness as she pursued revenge against Abby, leaving little space for positive emotions. Despite this, Ramsey expressed a strong desire to reprise the role of Ellie if a third game is ever made, saying she’d “be so happy to jump back into that world.”
I’m not sure Ellie has ever really experienced happiness, as a character. But honestly, I’d be thrilled to revisit that world if the opportunity ever came up. Whether it involved continuing Ellie’s story or something else, I’d love to be involved in any way.

Like her co-star, Bailey hoped to see Abby find happiness. Abby was a divisive character in The Last of Us Part 2 because of her involvement in Joel’s death, but she later attempted to make amends by saving two young Seraphites in Seattle. Bailey also expressed a desire to see Abby take on a leadership position, feeling she hadn’t been given the chance to demonstrate those qualities yet.
You know, as a fan, what I really want after everything that happened is just to see Abby find some happiness. I’m totally in the dark about where the story’s going, but honestly, I’d love to see her step into a leadership position. I always thought she had the potential to be an incredible leader, and it feels like we never really got to see that side of her fully explored.
At the end of The Last of Us Part 2, both Ellie and Abby’s journeys ended with a sense of closure, but their futures remained unclear. Ellie went back to Jackson by herself, having accepted Joel’s death and letting Abby go. Abby and Lev, after escaping captivity in Santa Barbara, set off in a rowboat and eventually landed on a mysterious shore, details of which are found in the game’s post-credits content.
What Should The Last of Us Part 3 Do With Ellie and Abby’s Stories?

Although a third The Last of Us game isn’t officially announced, many fans are hoping to see Ellie and Abby’s stories continue. The actors who play them have expressed a desire for the characters to find happiness, a sentiment echoed by viewers, given the immense trauma both have faced. However, The Last of Us has consistently shown that finding joy is incredibly difficult in a world ravaged by apocalypse.
The game ends with Ellie’s fate uncertain, as she walks away from Jackson only to discover her home is empty. Meanwhile, Abby’s story leaves some questions unanswered, and many players believe the beach seen after the credits suggests a connection to the former Fireflies she and Lev were searching for in Santa Barbara.
If Abby reconnects with the Fireflies – the group she used to be a part of before joining the WLF – it’s likely Bailey’s hope of seeing her in a leadership role could happen. The Fireflies have always been important to the story of The Last of Us, and it would be compelling to see them explored further in The Last of Us Part 3, perhaps with Abby taking on a leading position.
The HBO show The Last of Us appears to be fulfilling the potential of Abby’s strong leadership skills. In Season 2, Isaac (Jeffrey Wright) identifies Kaitlyn Dever’s character as a future leader of the WLF. If a third The Last of Us game isn’t made, Season 3 of the show might still allow the writers to further develop Abby’s story, as the creator, Neil Druckmann, originally intended.
