The Last of Us’ devastating episode had a hidden meaning in song that played over its final moments
The Last of Us season two spoilers follow.
In case you watched the recent episode of ‘The Last of Us’ titled ‘Through the Valley’, there could be a secret nod that you may not have noticed.
In the second episode of Season 2, Pedro Pascal’s character, Joel Miller, was tragically killed by Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever) in a vengeful act. This action came as a consequence of the incidents from the previous season.

After the tragic event that ensued when Jackson was besieged, Joel’s battered form was pulled along through the snow, accompanied by a melancholic version of ‘Through the Valley’ by Shawn James.
For those who might not know, the song’s cover was sung by Ashley Johnson, who lent her voice to Ellie in Naughty Dog’s initial games and also played Ellie’s mother on the TV show.
Previously, Johnson had made a cover of the song for the trailer of “The Last of Us: Part II” in 2016. Later, co-showrunner Craig Mazin revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the tune heard in the episode was a combination of the initial recording and some newly refined parts.
In the first game itself, Joel met his untimely end, signifying that the main actor, Pascal, would no longer be a permanent fixture in the series. According to him, he had been in a state of active denial about his character’s fate.
He stated that there was a consistent agreement to adhere to the original content in a particular manner, and the primary and unique responsibility was for the first season. The question was merely about the method and timing.
As I grow older, I tend to cling onto the belief that things aren’t really over, even though I acknowledge this. I remain deeply connected to numerous individuals from those experiences, and I hope to encounter them again in different settings.
However, playing the character Joel in “The Last of Us” is something I will never take on under the current circumstances. Moreover, I rarely dwell on this topic as it brings sadness to me, shared the actor who acted alongside Bella Ramsey in the main roles.
In the United Kingdom, you can catch season 2 of “The Last of Us” every Monday at both 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic. Additionally, it’s available for streaming on NOW. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on HBO.
