Neil Druckmann is leaving “The Last of Us.”
Neil Druckmann, one of the creators of the popular HBO series and the author behind the game it’s adapted from, declared on Wednesday his decision to leave the show prior to its upcoming third season.
Neil Druckmann announced on Naughty Dog’s Instagram that he is stepping back from his creative role in “The Last of Us” for HBO. In a statement, he explained that since work on season 2 has been completed and before significant work begins on season 3, this moment feels right to shift his full attention to Naughty Dog and its upcoming projects like writing, directing, and leading the studio as Studio Head and Head of Creative for their next game, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

We follow the evolution of Naughty Dog’s cultural sensation, starting with the game’s release in 2013 and culminating in its transformation into an HBO series a decade after.
Working together on this show has been a remarkable milestone in my career,” the statement went on. “It’s been a privilege to collaborate with Craig Mazin, both as executive producer, director, and writer, for the last two seasons. I’m incredibly grateful for the meticulous efforts and commitment shown by our talented team as they brought The Last of Us Part I to life on screen, and for their ongoing work in adapting The Last of Us Part II.
