The Last Kingdom veteran joins Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

As a die-hard fan who has weathered the tumultuous seas of Westeros for years, I am thrilled to hear about the upcoming adaptation of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms“. After the heart-wrenching conclusion of House of the Dragon, this lighthearted tale set in the same universe promises a refreshing change.

The second installment of “House of the Dragon” has concluded, and it looks like we’ll have to wait a few years more for the third season. However, HBO doesn’t want us to miss Westeros too much! In fact, they’re currently producing the first season of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” inspired by George R.R. Martin’s “Dunk & Egg” novellas, and we can expect it to air sometime next year.

As a devoted reader, I must say that the Dunk & Egg novellas offer a more lighthearted and entertaining take compared to Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. These stories revolve around a tall knight named Ser Duncan and his diminutive squire, Egg. The initial tale, The Hedge Knight, is primarily set during a tournament at Ashford Meadow in the Reach. Here, our wandering knight Dunk crosses paths with an array of characters, some even belonging to the Targaryen family, making for an engaging and captivating read.

The cast is growing as we watch. Here’s who we know about so far:

  • Peter Claffey as Dunk
  • Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg
  • Finn Bennett as Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen, a dramatic, half-mad Targaryen prince
  • Bertie Carvel as Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen, Aerion’s much more level-headed uncle
  • Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen, Aerion’s dad
  • Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, a puppeteer at the tourney
  • Daniel Ings as Lyonel Baratheon, one of the participants in that tourney
  • Steven Calvert as a Stormland knight
  • Rowan Robinson as Rowan
  • Abigail O’Regan in an unknown role

In this specific tale, it’s clear that Aerion is the one stirring up trouble. Interestingly, through Redanian Intelligence, we learn about another key figure: Ross Anderson, who portrayed Prince Domnal in Netflix’s historical series, The Last Kingdom, and its sequel Seven Kings Must Die. He will take on the role of Humfrey Hardyng, who initially clashes with Aerion Brightflame during a tournament, and later teams up with Dunk to challenge Aerion Targaryen prince when tensions escalate.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but eagerly anticipate the release of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” While the exact date is still unknown, considering HBO’s strategy to fill the gap between seasons of “House of the Dragon,” we might expect it in 2025. The first season will be composed of six episodes and, barring any unexpected budget-busting surprises, we won’t see any dragons. Instead, it’s hoped that this series will provide a refreshing change from the gloomy narrative unfolding in “House of the Dragon.”
