As a longtime fan, I always love seeing the Golden Globes! It’s such a fun night where all the biggest stars get together, celebrate each other, and enjoy themselves. They really let loose, toast to the past year, and recognize the incredible work happening in movies and TV – it’s a special event for everyone involved and for us watching at home.
Although the event was fancy and formal, it wasn’t without its share of surprising – and sometimes awkward – moments that left people stunned.
Nikki Glaser is back to host this year’s event, and it’s sure to deliver another unforgettable, shareable moment.
With the 2026 Golden Globes almost here, The Daily Mail is revisiting some of the most shocking, memorable, and discussed moments from past ceremonies.
TAYLOR SWIFT AND SELENA GOMEZ’S GAB SESSION
Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez became a social media sensation in 2024 after cameras caught them chatting and seemingly gossiping at an event in Beverly Hills, with Keleigh Sperry also nearby.
People quickly tried to figure out what Selena was saying by reading her lips, and they guessed she was telling her friends about an uncomfortable conversation she’d had with Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet.
The incident quickly became a popular online joke, with many fans hoping to see the two stars interact at future award shows. Some believe this viral moment has unexpectedly brought the Golden Globes – which have been working to improve their image since a 2022 scandal – to the attention of younger audiences.
A video captured Selena, Taylor Swift, and Miles Teller’s wife, Keleigh, engaged in a lively conversation. Selena seemed to be excitedly explaining something, visibly surprising both Taylor and Keleigh. Keleigh is then heard asking, ‘with Timothée?’ and Selena confirms with a nod.
KYLIE JENNER AND TIMOTHEE CHALAMET’S STEAMY PDA
Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet publicly appeared as a couple for the first time at the 2024 Golden Globes, and they were openly affectionate with each other.
The couple displayed a lot of affection publicly all night, and it quickly became a popular topic for online jokes and memes.
Okay, seriously, when I saw them kissing, it instantly took me back to that ‘Is this allowed?’ vine from 2014 – the exact same energy! And honestly, while some people were complaining about the cameras focusing on them, I was practically begging for more! I couldn’t look away, it was amazing!
One attendee tweeted that they couldn’t escape seeing Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner kissing, saying it happened ‘every 29 seconds’.
According to an eyewitness who spoke with The Daily Mail, Timothée Chalamet and Kendall Jenner seemed completely focused on each other at the event, spending the evening gazing at one another from their table.
During the commercial break, they completely ignored everyone around them, lost in kissing each other. It was a very young, sweet, and innocent kind of love, reminiscent of a high school romance.
JERROD CARMICHAEL CRACKS SCIENTOLOGY JOKE
I was really taken aback by Jerrod Carmichael’s joke during his set. He suggested swapping the awards Tom Cruise gave back to the Golden Globes for the return of Shelly Miscavige, David Miscavige’s wife. It’s a pretty shocking thought – she hasn’t been seen publicly since 2007, and he used that in a joke about the whole Tom Cruise awards situation. It definitely got people talking.
I was so excited to see Jay Ellis and Glen Powell present with Tom Cruise last year! It really brought back memories of when Carmichael came on stage – he was literally holding all three of Tom’s Golden Globes! It reminded me of why Tom actually returned those Globes a couple of years earlier – he was making a powerful statement about the need for more diversity among the Golden Globe voters. It was a really meaningful moment, and I admired him for it.
He said: ‘Backstage, I found these three Golden Globe awards that Tom Cruise returned.’
The comedian started the show by joking about the Hollywood Foreign Press’s issues with diversity. He then said, ‘I’m just the host, but I have an idea: let’s trade these three Golden Globes for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige.’ Tom Cruise wasn’t at the event.
Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, hasn’t been seen in public since August 2007. It’s unclear if a recent comment suggested actor Tom Cruise might know something about her current location. Cruise has been a member of the Church of Scientology for three decades.
In 2013, Leah Remini, a former member of the Church of Scientology, reported Shelly Miscavige missing to the Los Angeles Police Department. The police later determined she was safe and well.
Scientology responded to Remini’s actions by calling them unnecessary and a clear attempt to gain publicity.
JO KOY’S CRINGE MONOLOGUE
Comedian Jo Koy unexpectedly hosted the 2024 Golden Globes, and his opening monologue wasn’t well-received by most viewers.
The opening speech was so bad that people online called him the worst host ever, and many in the audience reacted with awkward, sympathetic laughter.
‘Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago, you want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up,’ Koy said at one point.
‘Slow down, I wrote some of these and they’re the one you’re laughing at,’ he insisted.
During a noticeably awkward part of his speech, Koy joked about the movie Barbie, claiming its pivotal moment was when Barbie started showing realistic flaws like bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet – things he described as the qualities that make an actor a ‘character actor’.
Selena Gomez looked shocked and disappointed after a joke fell flat – no one laughed, and she briefly lowered her head into her hands.
‘Some I wrote some others wrote,’ he added.
JENNIFER COOLIDGE BRINGS WHITE LOTUS CREATOR TO TEARS WITH MOVING SPEECH
Jennifer Coolidge gave a moving acceptance speech that brought many to tears in 2023 after winning an award for her performance in The White Lotus.
While speaking to the audience, she shared that the dreams she once had as a young person hadn’t quite worked out as planned, and she expressed gratitude to those who had supported her career with small roles and projects over the past two decades.
The speech also brought The White Lotus creator Mike White to tears.
‘I didn’t get to say what I really wanted to say at the Emmys, which is I didn’t get to say Mike White, you know, I just — truly, I just want you all to know that I had such big dreams and expectations as a younger person but what happened is they get sort of fizzled by life and whatever I thought I was going to be queen of Monaco even though someone else did it. But I had these giant ideas,’ she said, as they cut to White wiping back tears.
She admitted that getting older means difficult things will inevitably happen, but expressed gratitude to Mike White, saying he’d given her a fresh start and profoundly changed her life, even if this current chapter is ending.
She said her neighbors are now being friendly and reaching out to her. She explained that, after previously being excluded, people are now inviting her to parties, and she directed this observation specifically to Mike White.
She explained that Mike White is a deeply caring person, always concerned about the well-being of others – his friends, people in general, and even animals. She said he inspires her and gives her a zest for life, something she hadn’t felt before.
She exclaimed ‘Mike White!’ before her audio was cut off by censors. She then finished by saying, ‘Mike, I love you so much! This is a really fun night, thank you! Thank you!’
JEREMY RENNY BRANDED CREEP OVER J-LO ‘GLOBES’ JIBE
Jeremy Renner caused a stir online after making a joke about Jennifer Lopez’s appearance while they presented together at the 2015 Golden Globes.
While presenting the award for Best Actor in a TV movie or mini-series, Jennifer offered to announce the winner. Playfully, she asked, ‘Do you want me to open it? I’ve got the nails for it!’
Just before Billy Bob Thornton received the award for Fargo, Jeremy joked, ‘You have the globes, too!’
Jeremy faced a lot of criticism on Twitter, with people making fun of him and calling him names like ‘Best Supporting Creep’ and ‘Boob-seeking robot.’ He quickly responded to defend himself.
He shared a photo of himself and Jennifer smiling onstage at the Beverly Hilton, and tweeted a message reminding people not to take things too seriously. He thanked Jennifer, calling her a ‘gem’.
I was completely mesmerized when Jennifer walked onto the stage! She wore this incredible Zuhair Murad gown – seriously, the neckline was breathtaking. You could just tell it threw Jeremy off, because he totally abandoned his prepared remarks just to comment on how amazing she looked. It was a classic moment!
While Jennifer laughed it off like a pro on stage, Jeremy was roundly criticized.
According to Anne T. Donahue, Jeremy Renner quickly returned to his seat after making a joke about the Golden Globes. He nervously asked if anyone had heard it and thought it went well, but no one would look at him.
And Sarah Schaefer added: ‘Jeremy Renner wins best supporting creep #GoldenGlobes.’
After the incident, Jennifer spoke to E! News, saying she thought it was hilarious and that Jeremy is a very funny person. She even admitted it was a bit attractive.
RENEE ZELLWEGER WINS… BUT IS IN THE BATHROOM
In 2001, Renee Zellweger almost didn’t make it to the stage to accept her Golden Globe award because she had stepped away to use the restroom when her name was called.
Hugh Grant revealed the winner of the Best Actress award in a Musical or Comedy category – it was Nurse Betty! However, the actress wasn’t there to accept the prize.
He shouted, “Renee? Renee?” looking for her. He then exclaimed that she was under the table and appeared to be intoxicated.
‘Where is she, what’s happened? She disappeared. She’s in the bathroom. Okay, what do we do?’
Renee appeared flustered as she walked toward the stage while Grant started accepting the award for her.
As she greeted Grant she exclaimed: ‘Oh God, I had lipstick on my teeth!’
TINA FEY AND AMY POEHLER MAKE X-RATED LEO DICAPRIO JOKE
During the 2014 Golden Globes, hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler delivered a particularly daring joke by playfully referencing Leonardo DiCaprio, who had just won an award for The Wolf of Wall Street.
Tina and Amy, with mischievous smiles, introduced Leonardo DiCaprio, playfully comparing the audience’s reaction to the excitement surrounding a supermodel’s personal life.
Leonardo DiCaprio has famously dated several models, such as Bar Refaeli, Gisele Bündchen, and Erin Heatherton. He was with Toni Garrn at one point as well.
When the actor walked onto the stage and the audience burst into laughter, he looked visibly embarrassed.
Blushing bright red, he then stumbled over his words as he tried to keep a straight face.
While reading the names of the Best Actress nominees in the Drama category from the teleprompter, he accidentally mispronounced the title of Judi Dench’s film, saying ‘Philomania’ instead of ‘Philomena’.
Despite his blushes Leonardo seemed amused by the joke – just one of many by the comedy duo.
The hosts jokingly criticized George Clooney, suggesting the plot of ‘Gravity’ – a story about an astronaut choosing to drift off into space – was a metaphor for him avoiding relationships with women his age.
‘DRUNK’ ELIZABETH TAYLOR FORGETS TO READ OUT NOMINEES
In 2001, Elizabeth Taylor caused a stir when she presented the Best Motion Picture Drama award. She appeared to have had a bit too much to drink and accidentally opened the envelope revealing the winner before announcing the nominees.
The TV personality was immediately corrected by executive producer Dick Clark when she made a mistake on air. In a now-famous moment, she exclaimed, “What? I don’t open this? I just read the lines? I’m still learning!”
Clark walked onto the stage and announced, ‘To keep things exciting, let’s reveal the nominees first.’
Taylor announced the nominees and playfully pretended to check an envelope before revealing the winner: ‘Gladiator!’
Oh my gosh, the way she ended the whole show! It was just… perfect. She said, ‘On behalf of the Golden Globes, thank you and goodnight!’ But it wasn’t just what she said, it was how she said it – repeating ‘You all, you all you all!’ It was so her, so genuine, and I swear, I nearly lost it. I’ve replayed that moment like a million times already!
JACK NICHOLSON GIVES VALIUM-FUELED ACCEPTANCE SPEECH
Jack Nicholson is known for causing outrageous moments at the Golden Globes.
When Jack Nicholson won the Best Actor award for “As Good as It Gets” in 1998, he playfully exposed himself to the audience.
In 2003, Jack Nicholson won the Best Actor award for his dramatic role in ‘About Schmidt.’ He famously and jokingly admitted during his acceptance speech that he had taken Valium before the ceremony.
The actor, known for his playful humor, accepted the award from Nicole Kidman and jokingly said, “Doesn’t Nicole look nice… with her old nose?” This unexpected comment immediately stopped the warm applause. He was referencing the prosthetic nose Kidman famously wore while portraying Virginia Woolf in the film The Hours.
He jokingly expressed confusion about how to feel, saying he wasn’t sure if he should be pleased or embarrassed. He’d envisioned the project as a comedy, and felt even Dermot Mulroney’s haircut should have been enough to make it funny!
