The Jets heartthrob Eugene Hunt's cause of death revealed after collapsing in a Mormon church in Utah

I’ve read through this heartfelt tribute to Gene Hunt, a man whose life was as vibrant and captivating as his red hair. From his humble beginnings in Tonga to his meteoric rise as an Elvis Presley impersonator in Salt Lake City, Gene’s story is one of resilience, talent, and love.

It is regrettably confirmed that popular heartthrob Eugene Hunt passed away on the operating table, despite doctors’ tireless efforts over several hours to maintain his life during a procedure intended for exploratory heart examinations, as DailyMail.com reports exclusively.

The well-known singer, recognized as a part of the ’80s group The Jets and subsequently half of the successful duo Boys Club, was admitted to a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, seeking answers for heart issues that emerged just before his unexpected passing.

These were discovered when he collapsed and struck his head during work at his Mormon church’s library, prompting his wife of 35 years, Michelle, to rush him to the emergency room out of concern.

The doctors advised ginger-haired Hunt, aged 57, to undergo heart examinations; however, they were postponed for a few days due to the head injury he sustained, as reported by the Wolfgramm family who welcomed him into their fold and integrated him into The Jets.

According to bassist Haini Wolfgramm, who spoke to DailyMail.com, it appears that he fainted at church possibly due to insufficient oxygen supply, and remained unconscious for some time. Upon hitting his head particularly hard, Michelle rushed him to the hospital.

‘There was considerable swelling on him. Doctors decided to postpone some examinations and lab tests for a day. The results showed some concerns related to his heart that required detailed examination, however, due to his recent fall, the doctors chose not to subject him to such procedures straight away, preferring instead to allow him time to recuperate first.’

After some time had passed, he returned for the operation, but unfortunately, he didn’t survive it. Our family was, and still is, left in shock. It’s unbelievable that someone so young should have to face death.

It was recently unreported that Gene Wolfgram, formerly known as Hunt while with The Jets, passed away in April.

Bandleader LeRoy Wolfgramm stated: ‘Initially, they intended for a brief examination, but it stretched into numerous hours due to an unexpected heart attack he suffered during the procedure.’

They worked tirelessly for numerous hours, striving to sustain his life and exerting every effort imaginable. However, ultimately, they reached a stage beyond recovery, and the physician concluded that further attempts were futile.

Born in Western Samoa, Hunt was a member of the Tongan-American band The Jets, which consisted of eight family members. This group achieved global success between 1985 and 1990. They notched up five top ten hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, with their debut single, Curiosity, being one of them.

Afterwards, he established a group called Boys Club alongside Joe Pasquale. Their objective was to serve as an American equivalent of Wham! Despite only achieving one significant hit, “I Remember Holding You,” which peaked at number 8 in 1989, they made their mark.

Previously known by another name, but later returning to that original identity, Hunt reconnected with The Jets to produce four songs for a ‘greatest hits’ album in 1990.

As a devoted member of the Wolfgramm family, I’m still reeling from the shock of our beloved patriarch’s passing. Each evening, the Jets’ Las Vegas residency serves as a heartfelt tribute to the remarkable man who was the father of our four.

Haini, aged 56, mentioned, “I’m a bassist, typically preferring the less-spotted background, but Eugene was a vocalist who thrived in the limelight. He owned that stage; his charisma and allure were palpable, making him utterly captivating.

He was incredibly quick-witted, able to respond with clever, humorous one-liners at the drop of a hat, bringing laughter and joy to those around him.

‘As soon as his heart problem was disclosed, he downplayed it casually. In fact, my two siblings and I share the same heart condition. Surprisingly, Eugene reached out to invite me to our club.’

He had always been that way, a constant in my life. I stood by him during his wedding, and he did the same for me, making us more than just acquaintances. We were quite close indeed. The loss of him feels incredibly difficult to bear.

We honor him in our performance by displaying a video of him on a screen and discussing him with the audience. It’s hard for us to comprehend, but we find ourselves doing this. The void he left behind is immense.

After parting ways with Boys Club, Hunt reduced his pace in live performances, yet remained active within the music industry. As Gene often emphasized during the last five years, his primary focus was on his family, his faith, and all of us. This was evident in his daily life, he added.

LeRoy, aged 59, stated: ‘In the Tongan tradition, he was adopted into our family. I’m not aware of any official adoption process, but he was so deeply ingrained in our lives while growing up that we came to consider him as one of our own.’

He shared: ‘Two nights prior to his passing, I had a conversation with him. We were collaborating on some music projects and he sought my insights.’

Initially, he was scheduled to visit the recording studio. However, right before he could go, Michelle contacted everyone with the news that his brother wasn’t in good health. This came as a complete shock, and soon after, he was admitted to the hospital. The situation was utterly unforeseen.

Hunt moved to Salt Lake City with parents Francis and Alofa Hunt when he was four.

LeRoy mentioned that he had encountered the singer when the latter was ten years old, around the time his family’s band was starting to form, and shared what left the strongest impression on him.

At a church event, Gene enacted Elvis Presley’s performances, including singing “Hound Dog” and the entire act, complete with an Elvis-style jumpsuit.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but express my awe! This young performer, with his electrifying moves reminiscent of the King himself, Elvis Presley, had me utterly captivated on stage. It was this electric energy that drew me in and ultimately led to him becoming part of our group.

A glowing obituary written by his two families described Hunt as ‘bigger than life itself’.

Continuing the narrative: ‘His skin as pale as milk and hair fiery red, it was apparent to all that he was destined for something extraordinary.’

Following his relocation to Salt Lake City, it was here that his fame started to flourish. He commenced performing with various family bands throughout the city. At a young age, he became the city’s most renowned Elvis imitator, and he excelled on stage.

1988 saw Hunt encountering his future spouse in an unexpected manner. This happened during his visit to Hawaii, where he attended his brother’s wedding. Through a mutual acquaintance, he made the acquaintance of a young woman. Interestingly enough, he had previously glimpsed this very woman on a video showcasing Polynesian culture at the Cultural Center while traveling on a tour bus.

Back in June 1990, he casually mentioned he’d marry that woman. Little did we know at the time, but his words would prove prophetic. As always with Eugene, once he set his sights on something, he was relentless until he achieved it.

In the obituary, it was mentioned that despite his well-known success and acclaim, his deepest happiness and most significant achievements stemmed from his role as father to his four children, whom he affectionately referred to as ‘daddy’.
