The Irrational season 2, episode 6 recap and review: “The Wrong Side of Maybe”
As a seasoned viewer of crime dramas, I must say that “The Irrational” has certainly caught my attention with its unique blend of suspense and character development. The episode’s narrative was gripping, with the cliffhanger about Alec’s scars leaving me on the edge of my seat.
In The Irrational’s season 2, episode 6, when Laura drops some crushing updates on me, I spring into action. This scene teaches us a lot about odds, playing the role of a deity, and the dark side of power.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from The Irrational season 2, episode 6.
In The Irrational’s season 2, episode 6, I orchestrated what felt like a perfect storm. I manipulated Alec into visiting my workplace under false pretenses, but trust me, it was all for a noble cause. You see, I had reason to believe that a catastrophic collision was imminent – one that could potentially claim the lives of hundreds. Unfortunately, my company’s policy was to crunch the numbers but stay on the sidelines, leaving people in danger.
Why would you take that action? Willa, Laura’s boss, explains that it might lead to an even bigger issue down the line. In other words, while a 89% chance of a disastrous train collision is indeed alarming, such an event could potentially trigger a chain reaction of events. Willa likens herself and her company to time travelers. While they have knowledge about future occurrences, they don’t believe it’s wise to go back and alter the course of history.
Pondering often, I find myself questioning: If given the chance, would I travel back in time to prevent World War II? The question of “should we eliminate Baby Hitler” is frequently posed, but not because it’s about ending an infant’s life. It’s more about the uncertainty of whether this wasn’t the optimal outcome. Are we, as mere mortals, entitled to make such divine decisions?
Alec ignores the warnings in The Irrational season 2, episode 6
Despite Willa’s warnings, it’s no shock that Alec disregards them. Instead, he’s determined to avert the nearly 90% likelihood of a devastating incident. Partnering with Laura, a top-notch data analyst, they focus on a company holding approximately 70% stake in Line 2. This collaboration was hinted at in the episode preview, and it was obvious that this discussion wouldn’t follow the expected course. Willa remained unfazed by a single individual’s account.
Alec, Phoebe, Rizwan, Simon, and others needed to devise another solution to prevent the ongoing issue. Their strategy involved discouraging travel by announcing potential traffic jams and cancellations in a news conference. Instead of alarming people with warnings about a disaster, Alec informed them of these inconveniences, which prompted many to adjust their plans. This tactic was quite smart, indeed, but unfortunately, it didn’t work as planned.
This was where playing God didn’t work, though. What Willa predicted would happen, happened.
Kylie dealt with the hack on the warning system
The entire incident was caused by an unprecedented confluence of factors. Delays occurred with the trains, maintenance work was ongoing on one track, and crucially, there was a cyber attack on the system that alerts businesses about issues and imminent disasters.
The hack played a crucial role in the issue at hand. Although the hacker showed skill, Kylie surpasses him. She managed to determine that the software utilized was top-notch military technology and traced the location from where the equipment was pilfered. It didn’t take much time to secure a confession, but it turned out that the stolen equipment had been sold to someone else.
The situation involved a series of events, but Marisa and Alec managed to unravel it all. In fact, it was revealed that Zed, Willa’s second-in-command, had orchestrated everything. He found himself in debt, so he masterminded a complex scenario to make Laura feel compelled to take action. This led Alec to also act. Although the plan was intricate, it underscores the fact that data seldom deceives. While circumstances can alter data, those figures carry significant meaning.
Zed understood that Laura desired to take action for the removal of passenger trains from service. This led to the activation of the oil tanker trains instead, which Willa referred to as “explosive trains.” A collision between them could result in a catastrophic loss of life, with the risk of such an incident escalating to 91%. However, as Phoebe pointed out, they were the ones causing this disaster. Keep in mind, we don’t always have the power to act like gods.
Amidst everyone’s efforts to persuade the train conductor to slow down, it became evident that he had faced penalties for previous delays. Determined not to add to his woes, he maintained speed. It was Alec who took matters into his hands, bravely standing before a moving train. This act infuriated Kylie and Marisa, particularly Kylie, whose brother has a history of reckless behavior. She felt it was high time for him to change. Alec’s actions often disregard the feelings of others, serving as a constant reminder of why his marriage with Marisa didn’t last. While far from perfect, Alec offers a unique and engaging male protagonist.
In another phrasing, it was Alec who necessitated the train driver to apply the emergency brake. This action meant sacrificing just one life, but potentially saving hundreds more. Such dilemmas often test our moral compasses and reveal aspects of our personalities. Would you choose to save many lives at the expense of one? In this instance, the train driver chose to save everyone onboard.
Alec’s trio of researchers figure out their place in The Irrational
As events unfolded, Phoebe, Rizwan, and Simon found themselves navigating their working relationship. Originally, Phoebe was the lead researcher when she and Rizwan were a team. However, upon her departure, Rizwan stepped into that role and has continued in it even with Phoebe’s return. Meanwhile, Simon has always worked alongside Rizwan, but they haven’t quite developed the same close bond with Phoebe…not just yet.
Phoebe is the one who can find a solution to get things running smoothly. They’ll have to learn to embrace the uneasy situations, which isn’t always simple, but it can be essential. In this scenario, Phoebe seems correct. None of them have encountered anything similar before, and Simon and Phoebe are still in the process of understanding each other. Simon must confront the fact that Phoebe and Rizwan share a past, while Phoebe has to accept the growing bond between Simon and Rizwan.
In a refreshing twist, this issue was gracefully resolved in the episode, avoiding the common trope of constant competition and conflict. Many other shows might have opted for a series of fights, leaving no choice but to find a solution. However, these characters are intelligent adults who should be able to leverage their abilities to form a bond and collaborate effectively. Here’s to hoping that The Irrational continues to challenge stereotypes by showcasing mature problem-solving!
The episode concludes with a surprising turn of events. Originally, Alec sought information from a data analysis company about the possibility of receiving a new treatment for his scars, unsure if it was worth pursuing. However, after rescuing people and apprehending Zed’s criminal activities, Willa felt obligated to repay Alec by gathering the necessary details. It appears that there’s a high likelihood that all of his scars will disappear.
Is it possible that Alec will opt for the treatment, considering he’s longed to free himself from the constant reminder? For years, he’s been questioned about his scars by others. Yet, these scars are an integral part of his identity now. They offer a fascinating insight into the human psyche and what our scars symbolize to us.
