The Irrational season 2, episode 5 recap and review: "Anatomy of a Fall"

As a dedicated fan of “The Irrational,” I must say that this season is truly delivering some intriguing plot twists! In episode 5, Simon turns to Alec for help regarding an apparent suicide epidemic at the college, but it soon becomes clear that there’s more than meets the eye.

In the fifth episode of season 2 from “The Irrational”, Simon seeks assistance from Alec. Could it be that there’s a genuine spate of suicides at the college, or is there something sinister underlying the situation?

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from The Irrational season 2, episode 5.

Simon has certainly proven himself to kick off this season. He continues that in the latest episode, as he turns to Alec for help when it comes to dealing with what seems to be a suicide epidemic at the college. Alec knows that he needs to look into this to get to the bottom of it. Why have three students killed themselves on campus?

Indeed, it’s revealed that the third death wasn’t actually a suicide. Instead, she was pushed, which means Alec and Marisa must investigate and find out who did this.

Hiding a drug overdose is a crime in The Irrational season 2, episode 5

Initially, the sorority appears to be concealing something, a fact easily deduced without being a detective or psychologist. The closed-off second floor becomes questionable when Marisa attempts to learn about the recent student’s death, Kenzie’s – it certainly raises suspicions.

After some time, Alec managed to uncover the truth. The sorority sisters discovered that Kenzie had suffered a drug overdose. They didn’t want this fact to become public knowledge, and when they couldn’t resuscitate her, they decided it would be more advantageous to push her off a high building and make it appear as if she had committed suicide.

Indeed, this incident qualifies as a criminal act, albeit one of a lesser severity compared to murder. It’s not shocking that the sorority is being closed down following these events. However, it’s only when Marisa visits the sorority during its closure that she discovers there’s more to this situation than initially apparent.

Kenzie was trying to bring in something others didn’t want

Kenzie was engaged in drafting an organ donation legislation. Though many recognize its importance and potential benefits, there are individuals who oppose this strongly. The question is, would they go as far as to harm Kenzie for their opposition? Regrettably, the answer appears to be yes.

Marisa found it puzzling that Kenzie’s toxicology report didn’t reveal the drug overdose which should have been present in her system. This suggests something suspicious is happening, and Marisa eventually pieces it together: the person who conducted the toxicology test was an alumna of the sorority, allowing access to the second floor, and she had the capacity to manipulate the results of that report.

It seems unlikely that this action cleared the sorority entirely. The girls still acted unethically by attempting to cover up a murder and make it appear as a suicide, but it may somewhat lessen their blame. Additionally, it aids in exonerating Kenzie slightly since she didn’t intentionally take drugs and her death was not an overdose.

For Kenzie’s father, there’s a measure of solace too. He’s learned the truth about his daughter. The situation improves further when Alec expresses his intention to carry on Kenzie’s legacy. Given his network and the college, he seems capable of moving this forward. Alec recognizes survivor’s guilt, and he appreciates the desire to preserve memories. Even with answers and justice now in hand, he continues to sympathize and persevere in her cause.

Phoebe figures out what to do next in The Irrational

Previously, we mentioned that Phoebe might return to working with Alec, given the circumstances. However, it was unclear how this could be achieved due to Simon joining Rizwan. But rest assured, if anyone could find a solution, it’s Alec.

However, one might wonder why Phoebe seemed to struggle with understanding something new, given the series of events that had transpired in Rachel’s life? The funds were dwindling, a concept known as “last in, first out,” which significantly impacted Phoebe during this particular episode. With her job on the line and Rachel pointing out that she had held three research positions, there seemed to be a lack of loyalty displayed by Phoebe in this situation.

In essence, this conflict isn’t rooted in loyalty towards work; Rachel is retaliating against Phoebe because she believes Phoebe betrayed her. By sabotaging Phoebe’s chances at other research positions, Rachel is seeking revenge. With few interactions between them shown previously, it seems Phoebe sought advice and aid from Kylie, perhaps as a way to introduce Kylie into the narrative since Marisa was occupied with Alec. While this development might not align perfectly with logical expectations, it serves the story’s purpose.

Ultimately, it’s I who manage to resolve the issue at hand. To ensure our research doesn’t suffer, I decide to enlist an additional assistant. I can’t help but feel a tinge of concern that Simon might perceive this as being sidelined. However, it’s essential for you to understand that this move isn’t reflective of his work performance, but rather showcases Alec’s values of loyalty and friendship. Let this serve as a reminder, Simon, as we move forward in our collaboration with Alec.

In summary, the episode tackled significant issues related to college life, sororities, and academic pressure. It could have delved deeper into Kenzie’s legislative bill and the resolution of the crime appeared somewhat straightforward, yet for an early-season installment, it effectively accomplished its purpose.
