The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot will not ignore the events of I Still Know

As a seasoned horror aficionado with a lifetime of chills and thrills under my belt, I must say, the news about the upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” legacy sequel has me both excited and intrigued! The confirmation that the events of the original sequels will be acknowledged is like a breath of fresh air in this foggy world of reboots and remakes.

For horror enthusiasts, here’s an exciting update about the long-awaited follow-up to the classic I Know What You Did Last Summer, dubbed as a ‘legacy sequel’. The director and writer, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, has confirmed that this new version will acknowledge the events from the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Essentially, whatever transpired in ‘I Still Know’ will be integrated into the storyline of the legacy sequel.

As a hardcore gamer, I had heard whispers that the upcoming sequel would sidestep the events of its previous sequels, encompassing not just “I Still Know” but also the 2006 slasher “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.” However, it now appears those rumors were just that – rumors.

On July 30th, user CriticalOverlord on X platform asserted that the upcoming sequel would disregard the events of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and I Always Know What You Did Last Summer. However, Robinson swiftly addressed this claim by stating, “it is indeed not. ISKWYDLS is canon. I hope this clarifies things.”

In Robinson’s confirmation, it’s clear that the storyline of “I Still Know” won’t be erased in the upcoming legacy sequel. Yet, it remains uncertain if events from “I’ll Always Know” will be brought up. Given this, it seems likely that the 2006 sequel’s events, specifically “I Always Know,” won’t be addressed in the new film, as Robinson didn’t mention it in her response on X.

Apart from serving as director for the remake of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” Robinson collaborated with Sam Lansky in scriptwriting. The original screenplay was penned by Leah McKendrick. It’s anticipated that production on this slasher film will commence towards the end of 2024, with a planned theatrical debut set for July 18, 2025.

In February 2023, it was reported that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were discussing the possibility of reprising their characters Julie James and Ray Bronson in a reboot. During an interview with Us Weekly in July 2024, Prinze Jr. expressed his eagerness to be involved but noted that a deal must be reached, and a contract signed before this can become a reality.

Although it remains unclear whether Hewitt and Prinze Jr. will return for the remake, we do have information about the new actors joining the series. In July 2024, Camila Mendes from Riverdale and Do Revenge, Madelyn Cline of Outer Banks, Sarah Pidgeon from Lazareth, Tyriq Withers of Atlanta, and Jonah Hauer-King known for The Little Mermaid were given leading roles. Although the specifics of the storyline are being kept secret, it’s rumored that social media will have an impact on the film’s narrative, as suggested by McKendrick.
