The Hypeform Edit: 10 Things We Loved From 3DaysofDesign
The appeal of Copenhagen continues to soar unabated. With its vibrant culinary offerings, rich cultural heritage, and inviting laid-back ambiance, it’s no wonder that the city consistently attracts tourists week after week.
Over the past week, the city was bustling, especially during the annual 3daysofdesign event, where numerous hotels and rentals were fully booked. Throughout the week, hundreds of activities occurred, with prominent Danish brands such as HAY, &Tradition, and GUBI joined by international participants eager to share in the festival’s prosperity.
This year, I noticed a powerful sense of independence more than ever before, with non-corporate events seemingly taking center stage throughout the city. For instance, Other Circle transformed a substantial part of an old industrial building, blending up-and-coming labels with small studios under one roof.
A program called “Værktøj” featured designs by various artists, each using the same tool as their creative foundation. The standout piece of the week, titled “Home From Home”, was created by spatial designer Charlotte Taylor, earning her the top prize. Meanwhile, Bread and Butter showcased dining objects in a cafe setting, featuring 12 designers from Korea, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
Previously, attending 3daysofdesign would make one feel like the event was fully accomplished, but that’s no longer the case. Interestingly, this change isn’t unwelcome because this time around, it has left us craving for even more experiences.
As we yearn,
1. First item on the list is…
2. Next up is…
3. Moving along, we adore…
4. Another favorite of ours is…
5. Last but not least, we can’t forget…
6. And finally, to wrap things up, take a look at…
7. In conclusion, here are the items that have captured our hearts:
ADP Bench
+Halle and Spacon & X
The ADP Benches were strategically placed throughout the city, in spots like the Halle showroom and the recently opened Other Circle exhibition. At the latter, they were utilized to fill gaps, offering visitors a place to rest with a cup of coffee. Not only does this furniture piece boast an attractive design, but its functionality is equally impressive. The circular seating of the ADP Bench adjusts both upwards and downwards, catering to various heights and purposes.
Dream View Bench
Muuto and Lise Vester
Among numerous chairs designed for diverse purposes, this one truly stands out as exceptional. The collaboration between Muuto and Lise Vester has resulted in the “Dream View Bench,” specifically tailored for stargazing. The chair’s design originates from steel molded into a graceful, curved shape, with Vester tracing her posture in sand as a starting point. After conducting tests on people of varying ages and heights, the designer perfected the shape to ensure the most comfortable position for gazing at the night sky.
Hi Lo Sofa
&Tradition and Anderssen & Voll
During the festival, a standout moment was the &Tradition showroom, which teamed up with Norwegian studio Anderssen & Voll to create a “Sound Sanctuary.” This area aimed to honor the connection between design and music, a theme that’s becoming more prevalent at furniture events. The space was adorned with the studio’s latest Hi Lo modular sofa. The focus on comfort was paramount in its creation: “A great sofa will speak to your body when you sit on it,” said Torbjørn Anderssen.
Amanta Sofa
HAY and Mario Bellini
Created by Mario Bellini in 1966, the innovative Amanta modular seat was designed with an eye towards future living patterns. As it turns out, his foresight proved accurate, as vintage Amanta sofas are now highly sought-after and quickly sell on reselling platforms and dealer stores. Fortunately, HAY is making it simpler to acquire one, unveiling the reissued version at this year’s 3daysofdesign. It retains its timeless appeal just as effectively as before.
Alvar Aalto Collection Scented Candle
Iittala
Anyone with an appreciation for design should consider owning a piece reminiscent of Aalto’s work. The legendary glass vases originally designed by the Finnish architect for Iittala have been reimagined as a ceramic candle holder, offering three distinct scents. Each scent comes enclosed in a reusable ceramic container that mirrors the fluid form inspired by the original design.
Series 270 F Armchair
Verpan
The Danish design company Verpan, renowned for preserving, reissuing, and reimagining the designs of Verner Panton, recently released a notable reissue – the Series 270 F Armchair. This unique piece, considered a “rare gem,” was first developed in the mid-1960s. It is made from bent birch plywood, available in colors such as blue, red, orange, black, and honey-toned.
Pascal Lampshade
91—92
91-92 studio founders Zeyu Rong and Weibo Sun characterize their workspace as operating where “technology meets craftsmanship,” primarily concentrating on 3D printing. This year at 3daysofdesign, they showcased several collections, but the one that stood out to us was Pascal: a soft, 3D-printed lampshade featuring an inflatable-like, squishy appearance. The duo have refined their printing method to produce flexible materials, giving them a more pliable texture compared to standard 3D printed surfaces.
Around Table and Stools
AHEC and Andu Masebo
In partnership with the American Hardwood Export Company (AHEC), Andu Masebo designed an innovative table called “Around Table” that utilizes wood typically destined for cabinetry. Over the duration of the festival, this table design underwent continuous changes. Inspired by the dining table as a central gathering point in the home, Masebo organized numerous workshops surrounding the furniture to foster a sense of community. From a technical perspective, the handcrafted table consisted of eight curved segments and was complemented by a set of semi-stackable stools.
Sommerfugl Chairs
Niko June
The Sommerfugl series consists of rejuvenated school chairs, crafted from salvaged pieces refurbished and revitalized in our Copenhagen studio. Each item is individually distinctive, molded through careful subtraction and subtle adjustments to the seating position. Remaining signs of wear, such as scratches, crooked screws, or frayed edges, serve as intentional markers of history. The Sommerfugl series draws inspiration from the butterfly, symbolizing quiet metamorphosis – an exploration of recollection, matter, and motion, where innovation originates from existing elements and change appears both tender and deliberate.
Bench for Two
Nanna Ditzel
Fredericia refers to ‘A Bench for Two’ as a wooden drawing, which was initially presented in 1989 by the Danish designer Nanna Ditzel. This iconic piece, with its timeless charm, remains as relevant today as it was then. The reissued version continues to be produced in Denmark and comes in the original black-striped design, as well as three new colors: red, yellow, and pink.
