Lionsgate has released the official teaser trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is a prequel set 24 years before the original movie. It tells the story of a young Haymitch Abernathy as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games. This is before he becomes the mentor who guides Katniss Everdeen in the 74th Hunger Games.

What does The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping teaser trailer show?

Sunrise on the Reaping tells the story of the 50th Hunger Games, which is also called the second Quarter Quell. Usually, each of Panem’s districts sends two people to compete in the Games. But during a Quarter Quell, each district sends double that amount – four tributes – leading to a competition where 48 young people fight for survival.

Joseph Zada takes on the role of Haymitch Abernathy, a character previously portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the first four Hunger Games films. The new movie, Sunrise on the Reaping, shows Haymitch as a 16-year-old boy on the day of the reaping.

The cast of ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ features Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee Latier, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Ben Wang as Wyatt Callow, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Lili Taylor as Mags Flanagan, Billy Porter as Magno Stift, Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, and Ralph Fiennes returning as President Coriolanus Snow.

Francis Lawrence is directing the new film, Sunrise on the Reaping, with a script written by Billy Ray, adapted from Suzanne Collins’ book. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are producing the movie, and Cameron MacConomy is serving as executive producer.

Sunrise on the Reaping is the sixth installment in The Hunger Games series and the second film to explore the backstory of the Games. The first four movies starred Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, chronicling her fight against the Capitol. Released in 2023, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is a prequel that focuses on a young Coriolanus Snow during the 10th annual Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping opens in theaters on November 20, 2026.
