It’s confirmed: Sydney Sweeney’s hit movie, The Housemaid, is getting a sequel, planned for release in theaters next year. This follow-up is happening quickly, and it looks like Sweeney is building a long-term movie series. The sequel is also slated to compete with a major, highly-anticipated blockbuster when it comes out.
Lionsgate has set a December 17, 2027 release date for The Housemaid’s Secret, two years after the original film came out. This puts the sequel up against Avengers: Secret Wars, the big finale to Marvel’s Multiverse Saga. Lionsgate is probably hoping to attract a different audience, as the first movie, an R-rated thriller, successfully competed with Avatar: Fire and Ash last December, earning over $397 million worldwide. Even if Secret Wars is a blockbuster, it’s likely many viewers will still be looking for a more mature and suspenseful moviegoing experience.
Paul Feig is directing The Housemaid’s Secret, with Sweeney starring as Wilhelmina “Millie” Calloway. Kirsten Dunst will also appear in a significant role in the film, which is based on Freida McFadden’s novel of the same name. The story follows Millie as she takes on a new housemaid job and uncovers another unsettling mystery. This time, she’s hired by the wealthy Douglas Garrick, but is forbidden from seeing his ill wife, Wendy, leading Millie into a potentially dangerous situation. To announce the sequel, the film’s official social media shared a new poster.

More to come.
