The House of the Dragon showrunner is still equivocating about Rhaena Targaryen

As a dedicated fan and fervent reader of George R.R. Martin’s works, I find myself caught between the exhilaration of new episodes and the melancholy of departing characters that don’t align with my bookish expectations. The season 2 finale of House of the Dragon left me with a bittersweet taste, particularly regarding the fate of Rhaena Targaryen.

In the finale of “House of the Dragon” season 2, several questions were left unanswered, one of which concerns Rhaena Targaryen. After leaving her half-siblings, she ventured into the wilderness of the Vale in search of a wild dragon. By the end of the episode, she found it, but we’re not shown what happens next. Ryan Condal, the showrunner, hinted that this could be a sign to keep watching and follow the story further, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

If you’ve delved into George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood,” the basis for “House of the Dragon,” you may have surmised that Sheepstealer, the wild dragon residing on Dragonstone, is indeed the one claimed by a character named Nettles in the novel. It appears that Rhaena might take over her role in the series, which I find disappointing since Nettles is among my beloved characters from the book. However, it’s an adjustment I can manage, though it’s unfortunate nonetheless.

When queried about whether Rhaena was taking Nettles’ place, Condal evaded a clear answer. He remarked, “We genuinely admire Rhaena’s character and have put considerable effort into establishing her from the outset as someone in the Targaryen household who does not possess a dragon. It’s fascinating to observe how significant an idea it is.” Furthermore, he added, “We’ve noticed through Aemond’s character that growing up in a family, even during times of peace, the absence of a dragon can greatly influence one’s identity within the family. Similarly, Rhaena yearns for self-identification as a dragon rider and is prepared to take risks that could be quite perilous to make this dream a reality.”

We’re providing the television version of one objective truth of this history and anybody who reads the book is free to interpret it however they want to, but there is a there are a lot of paths to interpretation through this and I think the the Rhaena story, as we’re seeing it unfold, is potentially one of those interesting interpretations that we have to offer and I would just say that we don’t do any of this stuff lightly.

In simpler terms, “Fire & Blood” is a fictional historical account about the Targaryen dynasty, created from varying and sometimes contradictory sources by an unidentified author long after the events took place. The creators of the TV show have some leeway to interpret these ambiguous gaps, but it can become problematic when they use these gaps as excuses to introduce new storylines that aren’t directly related to the book content, even if the book is written in a vague manner.

In the first season, an unexpected event occurs during King Aegon’s coronation: Rhaenys Targaryen rides her dragon Meleys up from the Dragonpit’s floor, an incident not recorded in the book. One might wonder why such a grand spectacle was omitted from the historical record. Similarly, it’s worth noting that George R.R. Martin has stated dragons do not inhabit the Vale due to their preference for warmer climates. However, the series House of the Dragon depicts a dragon hunting in the Vale, which raises questions about this apparent contradiction.

As a voracious reader who has spent countless hours immersed in the pages of various books, I find myself increasingly annoyed by adaptations that stray too far from the original text. While I understand and appreciate the creative freedom that comes with adapting a story for the screen or stage, it irks me when these changes are presented as plausible interpretations rather than straightforward alterations.
