Notable figures like Beyoncé, Zac Efron, Nicole Scherzinger, and Lady Gaga are some of the numerous celebrities who experimented with reality television before achieving their significant success.
Fans might recall the unexpected instances when they saw their favorites on talent competitions such as American Idol and Star Search, or in dating shows like MTV’s Room Raiders and The Big Date.
As a lifestyle aficionado, I must say that during the 90s and 00s, fans got an intimate peek into the personal lives of their favorite celebrities through the shows they graced. It was fascinating to witness these superstars in a more relatable and unguarded setting compared to their usual high-profile appearances.
Celebrities such as Emma Stone, the Kardashians, and Jennifer Hudson shared stories about their modest beginnings on various TV shows prior to their success in Hollywood.
Everyday Mail uncovers the stars who graced reality TV shows before they were widely recognized in households everywhere.
Beyoncé – Star Search

The TV show known as Star Search, airing from 1983 to 1995 across 13 seasons, played a pivotal role in catapulting the careers of some big-name celebrities like Beyoncé, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake.
Beyonce gained widespread recognition as a member of the R&B group Destiny’s Child, later transitioning into an illustrious solo career that set numerous records.
When Beyoncé was only 12 years old, she made her debut on the show Star Search in 1993. She described this experience as a significant milestone during her teenage years.
Zac Efron – MTV’s Room Raiders

Just as I was about to take the world by storm with my breakthrough role in High School Musical, I found myself on a slightly different stage – participating in MTV’s Room Raiders back in 2005. It was quite an unexpected detour on my path towards stardom!
It came just one year before he became a household name in the Disney films in 2006.
MTV’s Room Raiders was a dating-style show where contestants chose a date based on their bedrooms.
At 17, the teenager looked every bit the typical, slightly awkward teen as he faced a choice among three dates, managing to muster up the confidence of Disney’s Troy Bolton in the process.
Nicole Scherzinger – Popstars USA

As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that I, at 47, have garnered an overwhelming number of accolades following my captivating performance in Sunset Boulevard. This extraordinary musical production even earned the esteemed Tony Award for the Best Revival of a Musical.
Prior to making her first appearance on the West End stage, Nicola had been performing for several years alongside her bandmates Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton, and Kimberly Wyatt in the Pussycat Dolls group.
However, before these events, Nicola had previously been part of Popstars USA in 2001, which eventually led her to be placed within the group known as Eden’s Crush.
After putting out an album and touring with NSYNC and Jessica Simpson, she eventually disbanded in 2002, marking the beginning of her new venture with the Pussycat Dolls.
Lady Gaga – Boiling Points

In the year 2005, before becoming widely recognized under her stage name, Lady Gaga (then known as Stefani Germanotta), made an appearance as a contestant on the MTV show titled “Boiling Points.
This program, much like Candid Camera, had participants encountering impolite and irritating actions, all the while oblivious to the fact that they were being recorded.
In the thrilling episode titled “Gaga,” when she was just 23 years old, I found myself on the edge of my seat as she and two others took part in an exhilarating challenge: staying swear-free for 14 minutes in a bustling Manhattan eatery, all for the chance to win a cool $100. Quite the test of willpower!
A waitress took each participant’s food away from them, before bringing it back covered in trash.
In the video, GaGa, with her dark tresses, didn’t manage to win due to an outburst of anger and profanity towards her server, which occurred after 12 minutes into the match.
She could be overheard questioning the waitress: “Isn’t it strange to eat that? Would you consider eating it yourself?
‘It has sh*t all over it! Clearly you would because you’re just, like, f***** up.’
Emma Stone – In Search Of The New Partridge Family

It’s hard to believe award-winning actress Emma Stone, 36, once appeared on a reality TV show.
she has been featured in numerous hit films such as Cruella, La La Land, Poor Things, and The Amazing Spider-Man.
But before she hit big time, Emma was just a young actress trying to make her way into Hollywood.
In 2004, her first appearance in a reality show aiming to assemble a fresh Partridge Family was recorded and has since been preserved on video due to YouTube.
At fifteen years old, the actress landed and won the part of Laurie Partridge following her powerful performances of Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch” and Pat Benatar’s “We Belong.
She mentioned to Vogue during an interview last year that at first she went in with a casual attitude, believing it was merely a reality search contest, but after being there for seven weeks, she found herself deeply desiring the victory instead.
Lucy Hale – American Juniors

Lucy, who is now 36 years old, first gained recognition in the music industry back in 2003, when she participated in American Juniors, a spin-off version of American Idol. This appearance led to the creation of a pop group similar to S Club Juniors.
2005 marked a point when their group disbanded, prompting Lucy to shift her focus towards acting. She acquired roles in The Bionic Woman, Privileged, CSI: Miami, and several other productions.
Aria Montgomery truly gained recognition, particularly for her role in the popular teen drama series, Pretty Little Liars.
Lucy has been honored with several distinctions, such as seven Teen Choice Awards, a Gracie Award, a People’s Choice Award, and two Young Hollywood Awards.
Glen Powell – Endurance

In the year 2002, when he was only 13 years old, Glen Powell made a brief appearance on the initial season of Discovery Kids’ series Endurance. However, his stint didn’t last long as he was eliminated in the very first episode.
Last year, the actor from “Anyone But You,” who is 35 years old and currently enjoying the success of his movie “Twisters” at the box office, felt mortified on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” when the host reminisced about their shared TV past.
Glen admitted that he found it challenging to discuss the topic, as he had never spoken about it in public before.
It’s surprising that such an incident occurred, but let’s delve into it. At the age of 13, I found myself participating in a program titled Endurance, which can be likened to a child’s version of Survivor. They would set us competitors against one another.
‘I wanted to be on the show really bad, and I got kicked off in the first episode.’
Jon Hamm – The Big Date

1996 saw Jon Hamm, then only 25 years old, serving tables in a restaurant while also participating in a television dating program… but he wasn’t chosen.
On The Big Date, the actor from Mad Men sported a somewhat outdated middle part in his hair, resembling a pair of open curtains.
During the show, Jon shares his ideal date scenario, suggesting it begins with delightful dining, followed by engaging conversations, and concludes with a soothing foot massage for a truly wonderful experience overall. He conveys this assuredly to the host.
‘Jon is all about being fabulous,’ the host quips later.
