The Heart-Wrenching Twist We’ve All Been Waiting For in The Old Guard 2!

SPOILERS are ahead for The Old Guard 2, now streaming with a Netflix subscription.

I’ve eagerly awaited “The Old Guard 2” among Netflix’s 2025 releases, ever since the nail-biting finale of the first film left me hanging. The captivating bond between Charlize Theron’s Andy and Veronica Ngo’s Quynh in the 2020 action blockbuster, a connection that spanned millennia before they were separated 500 years prior to the timeline of “The Old Guard ” films, had me hooked. Naturally, I was curious about the director’s plans for introducing Quynh into the present day for the sequel.

During my conversation with Victoria Mahoney from “The Old Guard”, we discussed the film’s ending and I was intrigued about reviving the character who had died repeatedly in an underwater coffin for centuries. Mahoney shared her thoughts on how this character would react to emerging from her own personal inferno. In her own words:

Let’s discuss Veronica for a moment, as she meticulously replicated every note, scene, and sequence, all the way to constructing and enhancing her storyline. Even with the depth of 500 years underwater in mind, she never wavered. Off camera, we would often chuckle because, well, it’s hard to envision something so extraordinary, isn’t it?

In most films I’ve watched, Veronica Ngo isn’t a familiar face to me, except for her brief yet pivotal appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. However, her role as Quynh, as the director mentioned, seemed challenging due to its complex narrative.

It seems they frequently discussed this topic during filming for The Old Guard 2, as she went on explaining.

We delve deeply into conversations about the physical implications of staying submerged for extended periods, the psychological, spiritual, emotional, and neurological aspects as well. This means that the distress, the statement you make, is likely to resonate with many individuals worldwide, as there are undoubtedly numerous people experiencing pain because someone failed to reach out to them.

In a surprising turn, both critics and viewers are expressing disappointment towards “The Old Guard 2” (following its reshoots after initial production), but there’s an intriguing angle that tugged at many hearts – Quynh’s sorrow over Andy not being the one to locate her and free her from her watery captivity. Despite Andy searching for her across oceans for centuries, she was deeply affected when the person most dear to her didn’t manage to save her. Mahoney shed more light on this poignant aspect of the film.

Instead of asking why you didn’t come find me, they want to know why you didn’t come pick me up? Their dynamic, where they rescue, fix, and save each other, is truly intriguing and captivating. Additionally, the scene in the flashback when Andy is driving towards Rome to meet Quynh for the first time in 500 years, she stops, and there’s a flashback to Viking times. This part of the story was skillfully crafted to show that at that moment, Quyhn rescued Andy from her darker side.

In summary, Andy and Quynh’s situation appears to conclude on a positive note as they decide to work together at the end of the movie to rescue The Old Guard when threatened by Uma Thurman’s character, Discord. However, I concur with the director’s assessment that their story in the sequel carries a deeply emotional weight, since although these characters gain more time to live, it may intensify and make the feelings of heartbreak even more poignant.

It’s a relief that they reconcile before the end, but with the film concluding on another nail-biting cliffhanger, it seems their battle still isn’t fully resolved… not just yet.
