The Hardacres season 2’s new villain could destroy the family from within

Things are starting to go wrong for the Hardacre family, and they might not even know it yet. The second season of Channel 5’s historical drama began this Thursday, May 14th, continuing the story of the Hardacres as they get used to their new, wealthy life. However, their newfound fortune has attracted a dangerous new rival who could be their biggest threat yet.

Wow, tonight’s episode really showed the family thinking big! It’s clear things are changing in the country, and they’re trying to get ahead of it. I was really impressed when Sam Hardacre suggested turning their herring shops into full-on general stores. He’s always looking to the future, and he’s worried about a possible recession, so he’s trying to protect the family business. It’s a smart move, honestly!

Despite Sam’s hopeful planning, some family members remained upset. Lady Emma Fitzherbert was particularly disturbed by the family’s increasing success, struggling to accept anyone from outside their exclusive social circle. However, her disapproval became secondary when her mother, Lady Imelda Hansen, unexpectedly arrived for a visit.

Michele Dotrice as Imelda Hansen

Imelda, played by Michele Dotrice, arrived in tonight’s episode and immediately created tension, even with her daughter, Emma. Emma clearly wanted her mother to leave quickly, hinting at a complicated past between them. Trying to smooth things over, Emma threw a garden party, but Imelda unexpectedly insisted on inviting the Hardacre family.

The meeting started off surprisingly well. Imelda immediately made a good impression on the family, appearing friendly, inviting, and wanting to resolve their long-standing disagreements. She seemed to be encouraging Emma and Mary to make peace, giving everyone hope she could finally end the conflict between their families. However, that positive facade quickly disappeared.

What to Read Next

After the Hardacres left, Imelda finally showed her true colors, threatening to punish the family for their perceived social inferiority. Tonight’s episode made it clear that Imelda is more than just a typical snob – she’s a genuinely dangerous opponent, and she’s prepared to wait a long time to get her revenge.

Michele Dotrice has warned her character is worried about her granddaughter’s future – a firm motivation for her to go against the Hardacre clan

Before the second season began, Michele described her character as someone stuck in the past, valuing tradition and established wealth. This makes her very anxious about her granddaughter’s future and determined to see her marry into a respectable family. She strongly disapproves of the Hardacres, a newly wealthy family, because their values clash with everything she believes in.

Michele has cautioned viewers not to underestimate Imelda. She described Imelda as a skilled manipulator with a softer side, but emphasized her terrible treatment of her daughter and the family as a whole. Imelda believes she’s doing the right thing, but she creates chaos and disruption wherever she goes.

Niall McNamee has joined the cast as Captain Blackwood

This situation could be really damaging for the Hardacres. While Emma clearly dislikes the family, Imelda seems much more strategic. She’s good at using charm to get people to like her and is skilled at getting them to overshare information. Even Emma noticed her mother’s habit of telling stories as a way to subtly get others to reveal secrets.

Michele Dotrice is just one of the new actors joining the show, which is based on CL Skelton’s books. Alongside Claire Cooper and Liam McMahon, who play Mary and Sam, Niall McNamee (known from Saipan and Bad Sisters) and Edward Mitchell (who appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League) are also new to the cast. McNamee will play Edward Blackwood, and Mitchell will play Arthur Lewis.

The Hardacres airs every Thursday on 5 at 9pm.
