The Handmaid’s Tale star says she’s drawn to dark roles: “I can’t seem to help it”

Actress Yvonne Strahovski, who plays a key role in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” has looked back on her acting journey and mentioned that she tends to gravitate towards characters with complex and intense storylines.

Throughout the entire run of the dystopian drama, from its debut to the controversial final episode of season six, the actor portrayed Serena Joy Waterford. During this period, she was required to act out some rather unsettling scenes.

Since the series that garnered her two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series has come to an end, she is now focused on what lies ahead.

During an interview with Deadline, the question was posed to Strahovski about her willingness to explore comedic roles, such as a part in a light-hearted comedy.

With a chuckle, she confirmed, “Indeed, that’s me!” She then qualified her statement, expressing a preference for lighter content, yet admitting her attraction to deep, challenging topics.

I’m not sure about the answer. It feels like we can’t avoid it. Movies, games, or even creating them provide us with a way to channel our troubles and negativity. There’s a lot of darkness in the world, and somehow, it needs an outlet.

Initially, I found myself rooting against Serena due to her antagonistic role. However, as the story progressed, she underwent a remarkable transformation, developing empathy and joining the rebellion. Her journey took an unexpected turn when she met Commander Wharton, who appeared to genuinely care for her, offering a fresh perspective in my relationship with her character.

Yet, he showed his genuine character when he offered her a handmaid, thereby slipping back into that dismal pattern of behavior.

In regards to acting out that particular scene, Strahovski shared that she genuinely experienced the feelings her character was portraying.

When she entered the room, she expressed that she felt both surprised and angry. Since I can empathize with her character, Serena, it seems those emotions mirror mine as well.

For such a prolonged period, I hadn’t set foot in the household that belonged to Gilead, which is mine. Serena had been free of that for quite some time, and it seemed unlikely she ever anticipated seeing this crimson gown, symbolizing what it signifies, within her own quarters again. The weight of betrayal was palpable.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 is available to stream on Prime Video and Channel 4 in the UK.
