‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Star Amanda Brugel Teases Rita’s Return in ‘The Testaments’

Spoilers ahead for The Handmaid’s Tale.

Every streaming platform boasts numerous popular TV series, and undoubtedly, “The Handmaid’s Tale” is among them if you have a Hulu membership. This book-turned-TV-production has concluded its run on television, and all our beloved characters took part in resisting Gilead. Even Rita, the former Martha, was included in this rebellion. Actress Amanda Brugel recently discussed her character’s fate (and there’s a chance she might reappear in “The Testaments”).

Information regarding The Testaments is scarce, sparking curiosity among fans as to which beloved characters may reappear in the spinoff. Fans are still processing the finale of The Handmaid’s Tale series, where fan favorites like Emily made a return. In the second-to-last episode, Rita actively participated in Mayday’s uprising, employing a gun to aid June’s survival. During an interview with THR about her character’s ending, Brugel hinted:

I’m deeply grateful and adore her immensely. Since I’ve provided insights about her, I felt validated when she was finally recognized. It seemed like she was on the verge of the recognition and triumphs that her character truly deserved. My affection for her grew into a sense of pride because I cherish her so much. Yet, I also enjoyed it from the perspective of the audience members.

Initially, Rita played a minor role in “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 1, often seen serving the Waterfords from the kitchen and making witty comments. However, as the series progressed through six seasons, Brugel skillfully revealed more about Rita’s character. This gradual unveiling showcased both her fierce spirit and sensitive side. In the end, Rita teamed up with Mayday during Serena’s wedding and Boston’s liberation.

On Hulu, you can savor “The Handmaid’s Tale” without any charges for an entire month! This offer is exclusively for new and qualifying returning customers. After this 30-day free trial, the service plans start at just $9.99 per month. Don’t miss out on this deal!

In a move fitting with Rita’s character as she covertly contaminated Serena’s wedding cake to resist Gilead, viewers like me were taken aback when she teamed up with Luke and Mayday to thwart June’s execution. The moment when she pulled out a gun and eliminated a Gilead solider was a satisfying conclusion, and one that Brugel appeared delighted by. As she explained:

Yahlin and Eric often considered Rita as the individual who is most connected with the audience, not necessarily someone planning to take action but rather someone focused on their own safety and that of their family, making prudent decisions. She’s just an ordinary person keeping a low profile. However, there’s a hidden rebellious spirit within her, which I appreciate. And to witness her actively rebel over multiple episodes, instead of just a single moment, is the perfect culmination for me in terms of her character development.

In this conversation, Brugel disclosed that Rita had been spared from potential death by Margaret Atwood as one of the characters not to be killed off on the show. However, viewers were unaware of this, leaving me anxious about Rita’s fate in New Bethlehem. Fortunately, she managed to rejoin her family and assist Mayday simultaneously in the final outcome.

Rita was absent from the final episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” except for a brief appearance in June’s fantasy karaoke sequence. Her character did not appear in the novel “The Testaments.” During an interview with Brugel, This Hollywood Reporter mentioned this omission. Intriguingly, she hinted at a potential comeback to her iconic role, suggesting:

No. She’s not. But that doesn’t mean you might not see her.

It appears there’s a strong possibility that Amanda Brugel might reprise her role as Rita in The Testaments. For now, we can only speculate since the spinoff series is still in development. If she does indeed return for the next series set in Gilead, it will be exciting to see her character again!

Currently, you can find the complete series of “The Handmaid’s Tale” on Hulu. The last season is slated to debut as part of the 2025 television premieres. Here’s hoping we receive news about the spinoff in a timely manner.
