The Handmaid’s Tale: Nick Betrays June, Snatching Away Their Happy Ending

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, episode 6!

The sixth episode of the sixth season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” has been released, and it seems that any hope for a romantic future or happy ending for June and Nick might be extinguished. The love triangle involving June, Nick, and Luke has been a central plotline since the series began, leaving viewers speculating if June will ultimately choose her husband over her Gilead lover. Yet, the events of season 6, episode 6 could have given us an answer, as Nick appears to have committed an act that June may find unforgivable.

In the sixth episode of season 6 in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, a crucial installment unfolds that substantially shapes June’s love triangle, an intriguing aspect given Luke has no part in it. The narrative picks up following the conclusion of episode 5, with Commander Lawrence striving to free June from Gilead. He approaches Nick, who consents to assist. However, their mission is fraught with hurdles such as Commander Wharton, yet Nick remains committed to helping June. Towards the end of the episode, a surprising disclosure suggests that their romantic relationship has likely reached its end.

There’s Likely No Coming Back From Nick’s Betrayal Of June & Mayday

June Cannot Forgive Him

As Nick secretly takes June out of Gilead, he unexpectedly finds Commander Wharton in his residence. Their discussion is cut short when June chooses to seek aid from Serena Joy instead. Upon reaching Serena’s home, they are unexpectedly confronted by Commander Wharton again. Hiding in the closet, Nick and June eavesdrop on their conversation. In this exchange, Wharton discloses that he is aware of Mayday’s raid on Jezebel’s, a knowledge gained through a confession from none other than Nick himself.

In “The Handmaid’s Tale” season 6, the central plot revolved around Mayday’s plan to use Jezebel’s as a base for an attack on some of Gilead’s most influential Commanders. This is why June found herself in Gilead and teamed up with Moira to warn the women at Jezebel’s about the impending attack. The attack on Jezebel’s was a desperate attempt to undermine Gilead, given the increasing power of the Gileadean regime. If Mayday had successfully carried out this plan, it would have been a significant blow against Gilead, which is why June feels so betrayed by Nick.

The Handmaid’s Tale Snatched Away June & Nick’s Happy Ending

She Almost Went To Paris With Him

Upon Nick’s initial visit to Serena Joy’s residence, he appears flustered, suggesting an unconventional proposition to June. Nick implores June to accompany him to Paris, yearning for her to evade the constraints of Gilead and find tranquility with him. Although June has a family, she shows an unexpected receptiveness towards this idea. At this juncture, June harbors affection for Nick, and the Paris journey serves as a possible means for her to escape her suffering.

If June and Nick had ventured to Paris, it could have signified a content ending for The Handmaid’s Tale; however, Commander Wharton’s arrival abruptly disrupts this scenario.

Since June has discovered Nick’s act of treachery, it’s highly unlikely they can reconcile and move forward together. Nick’s betrayal not only jeopardized Mayday’s mission to bring down Gilead but also robbed June of an opportunity to rescue Hannah. With Gilead remaining in power, the death toll continues to rise, placing some guilt on Nick for his role in its continuation. Nick admitted his actions solely to preserve his own life, which has left June feeling deeply betrayed by him.

June & Nick Always Had To Be Doomed In The Handmaid’s Tale

They Were Never Going To End Up Together

Despite the significant attention given to June’s love triangle on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” it has always been evident that her connection with Nick would not last long-term. June’s affection for Nick served as a beacon of hope amidst her oppressive life in Gilead, but she has consistently pursued reuniting with Luke. When she eventually managed to reconnect with him, it signaled the end of any prospects for her and Nick. Given the strong feelings among “The Handmaid’s Tale” fans, the show likely wouldn’t conclude with June leaving her husband, suggesting that their relationship was never a viable option in the first place.

Nick’s loyalty towards Gilead complicated his relationship with June significantly. Despite his actions for June that were almost treasonous in nature, he remains an enforcer of the oppressive Gileadean regime. If June decides to be with him, it would seem like a betrayal against her strong disdain for Gilead, making for a perplexing conclusion to The Handmaid’s Tale.
