The ‘Hamilton’ musical movie is coming to theaters this September

The hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” is making its way to the big screen on Sept. 5.

Last night, during an interview on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed the upcoming theatrical release date for his Tony Award-winning musical.

Initially, our plan was to debut ‘Hamilton’ in cinemas, but due to the pandemic, we had to adapt and instead chose to make it available for streaming. Miranda explained this on the show. However, soon you’ll have the opportunity to watch ‘Hamilton’ on the big screen, not just in the US but also in Puerto Rico.

The big-screen debut of the show signifies an important achievement: It’s been almost a decade since the off-Broadway debut of “Hamilton,” a musical inspired by the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States. Developed by Miranda, who also wrote the music, lyrics, and script, this groundbreaking musical incorporates elements of hip-hop and R&B. It draws upon “Alexander Hamilton,” a 2004 biography penned by Ron Chernow. The musical ultimately won 11 Tony Awards, including best musical, and the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 2016.

The creators of ‘Hamilton’ discuss ‘The Hamilton Effect’

Discussing its transformative impact on the world of entertainment, music arranger Alex Lacamoire, dance creator Andy Blankenbuehler, and director Thomas Kail share their thoughts on the groundbreaking musical “Hamilton”.

The movie was made back in June 2016, capturing a live show at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway. It features many of the original actors. In this production, Lin-Manuel Miranda plays Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. portrays Aaron Burr, Renée Elise Goldsberry is Angelica Schuyler, and Phillipa Soo takes on the role of Eliza Hamilton.

Initially, the movie was scheduled to hit the big screen in October 2021. However, Disney purchased global cinema rights worth $75 million in 2020 and premiered it later that year only on their streaming service. The film subsequently garnered two Emmy Awards in 2021.

To mark the anniversary of “Hamilton,” celebrations are taking place in various forms. Before Lin-Manuel Miranda’s appearance on the “Tonight Show,” Madame Tussauds New York revealed a lifelike wax figure of Miranda portraying Alexander Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Today, two exceptional showcases of the popular musical are scheduled at the very same theater. As reported by the Associated Press, every actor who’s graced the stage in the Broadway musical since its debut has been invited to attend.

For the afternoon show, tickets had been distributed through a lottery system. The evening event, however, is an exclusive fundraising occasion solely for the Immigrants: We Get the Job Done Coalition – a collective of 14 non-profits dedicated to assisting immigrants nationwide.

Tickets for the film are now available for purchase.
