Toxic Town

Also premiering in early 2025, *Toxic Town* tells the real story of the Corby toxic waste case. A group of mothers from the Northamptonshire town took their local council to court after their children were born with limb abnormalities, believing these were caused by the council’s failure to remove toxic waste from a former steelworks.

The series boasts a talented cast including Jodie Whittaker (known from *Doctor Who*), Aimee Lou Wood (*The White Lotus*), and Robert Carlyle. *Digital Spy* gave it four stars, calling it a powerfully moving story full of both hope and sadness, and focused on its characters.

Best Interests

In the film *Best Interests*, Michael Sheen and Sharon Horgan play parents caught in a difficult situation when their daughter, who has a rare muscle-weakening disease, develops a serious chest infection. Doctors believe the best course of action is to stop providing life-sustaining treatment, but the parents disagree, leading to a legal fight.

DS described the work as a thoughtful and nuanced look at a difficult topic, emphasizing that it doesn’t offer easy answers. They noted that while it has a message, what each person gets from it will likely be personal and unique.

Help

Written by Thorne, this TV film was praised by DS as a standout show of the Covid pandemic. It tells the story of a caregiver in Liverpool who supports a man in his 50s with early Alzheimer’s as the pandemic begins.

This gripping drama stars Jodie Comer and Stephen Graham, with strong supporting performances from Ian Hart (known for *The Responder*), Lesley Sharp (*The Full Monty*), and Sue Johnston (*The Royle Family*).

The Accident

Okay, so I just started watching this new Channel 4 series, and it’s intense. Sarah Lancashire is amazing in it, and the story is really gripping. It’s a four-parter inspired by real tragedies like the Grenfell Tower disaster and Aberfan, which makes it even more powerful. Basically, it’s set in a Welsh town where a bunch of teens die in an explosion at a new building site, and the whole thing kicks off a massive fight for justice. It’s a tough watch, but really well done.

The 2019 show stars Mark Lewis Jones from *Stella*, Nabhaan Rizwan from *Kaos*, Joanna Scanlan from *After Love*, and Adrian Scarborough from *Killing Eve*.

The Virtues

The popular series reunited Thorne with director Shane Meadows (known for *This Is England*). Stephen Graham starred, joined by Niamh Algar (from *Mary & George*) and Helen Behan (*This Is England ’88*).

This story centers around a man struggling after his wife and son move to Australia. He returns to Ireland to find his sister, hoping to rebuild connections, but ends up confronting painful memories from his childhood.

Kiri

This miniseries, another collaboration between Thorne and Lancashire, centers on the disappearance of a young Black girl living with her white foster family. The event deeply impacts the entire community.

When it debuted in 2018, *Kiri* was a major success for Channel 4, earning praise for its well-developed characters and strong acting. The show features Lucian Msamati (from *Conclave*), Paapa Essiedu (*The Lazarus Project*), and Wunmi Mosaku (*Sinners*).

National Treasure

I was so thrilled when Thorne won a BAFTA for his work on that 2016 miniseries! Honestly, when it first came out, Digital Spy called it one of the best and most moving shows they’d seen in years, and I totally agreed. It really stuck with me.

Written after the revelations of the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal, *National Treasure* centers on Paul Finchley, a celebrated comedian whose life unravels when he’s accused of sexual assault by multiple women. The series stars the late Robbie Coltrane in the lead role, with powerful supporting performances from Julie Walters as his wife, Marie, and Andrea Riseborough as their daughter, Dee.
