Considered by many to be the best sci-fi TV show ever made, this series is coming to free streaming just in time for the new year. Originally premiering in 1993, it quickly became a major cultural hit of the 90s, influencing both fans and filmmakers. The show is famous for its wild plots and the fantastic connection between its two lead actors. All eleven seasons will be available to stream on Pluto TV starting January 1, 2026, offering viewers a deep dive into government conspiracies, alien encounters, and other mysterious events.
We’re talking about The X-Files, the science fiction drama created by Chris Carter and starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. It first aired on September 10, 1993, and while it didn’t become popular overnight, it gradually gained a huge following through positive reviews and recommendations. The growing internet also played a part, with fans using online forums like alt.tv.x-files to share theories and dissect the show’s complex storylines.
Starting January 1st, 2026, Pluto TV will make all 11 seasons of The X-Files available to watch for free, both on demand and through a new 24/7 channel dedicated to the show. This joins a growing list of classic sci-fi series with their own channels on the platform, including Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, Stargate, and Doctor Who. Pluto TV will begin with a full, season-by-season broadcast, followed by themed marathons every weekend. Currently, The X-Files is only available on Hulu, making this exciting news for fans without a subscription who want to revisit the series from the very beginning. For those unfamiliar, here’s a quick overview of the show:
The X-Files is a long-running science fiction show about FBI agents who investigate strange and unexplainable cases. Throughout most of the series, Fox Mulder, a believer in conspiracies, and Dana Scully, a skeptical realist, relentlessly search for the truth, even though the government dismisses the cases as hoaxes. The show, created by Chris Carter, became a major cultural phenomenon, and he also served as its executive producer.
‘The X-Files’ Is Being Rebooted by Ryan Coogler

Fox
Following the trend of 90s reboots that evoke fond memories, The X-Files is getting a fresh take from Ryan Coogler, the director behind Black Panther and Creed. While details are still limited, the new series will reportedly include both standalone monster episodes and a larger, season-long storyline, much like the original. Coogler recently shared some insights on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with host Josh Horowitz.
A true X-Files experience needs both standalone monster cases and a larger, season-long mystery, and we’re aiming to deliver both. I’m currently working on that balance, and Black Panther [3] will be the next project after this one.
It’s still unclear if the original actors will be in the new series, but we wouldn’t be shocked to see David Duchovny or Gillian Anderson make a quick appearance or two. While we wait for more details, you can enjoy the original The X-Files when it becomes available on Pluto TV starting January 1, 2026.
